Examples of work

  • Conducts tours and educational programs at the site appropriate for groups of different age and interest levels.
  • Schedules tours and programs for the most efficient and effective use of the site.
  • Assists in the collection management of historic house museums, including cataloging and basic conservation of historic objects.
  • Coordinates the appropriate use of the historic site with local historic, educational and social groups.
  • Regulates visitor's use of the historic site and maintains a professional museum environment.
  • Confers with classroom teachers and other educators on the content of proposed programs and prepares pre- and post-visit materials.
  • Acts as liaison with local historical, educational, and social groups, and delivers programs on request.

  • <b>REQUIREMENTS
  • EXPERIENCE</b>
  • One year of experience in the care and custody of antiques or artifacts or work as a historical tour guide.
  • <b>SPECIAL NOTE</b>
  • Appointee may be required, at the direction of the appointing authority, to establish residence at the assigned Historic Site upon appointment.

License

Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Ability to acquire basic knowledge of museum management techniques and procedures.
  • Ability to acquire basic knowledge of museum exhibit design.
  • Ability to learn to maintain basic records and inventories and catalog museum objects in the collection in a clear, concise and appropriately descriptive manner.
  • Ability to speak effectively to groups of people of varied age and educational levels clearly and accurately.
  • Ability to assign, instruct, and supervise the work performance of subordinate seasonal or part-time employees and volunteers.
  • Ability to work with local historical, educational, and social organizations and coordinate their use of the Historic Site.
  • Ability to regulate visitor's use of the Historic Site and maintain a professional museum environment.
  • Ability to provide basic maintenance necessary to the clean, safe, and attractive presentation of the site to the public.
  • Ability to operate basic audio visual equipment.
  • Ability to prepare basic correspondence and reports as directed.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
