Definition
Under direction of a Superintendent of Laundry, a Housekeeping Supervisor, or other supervisor in a state department, institution, or agency, either (a) supervises management of all functions, facilities, services, and personnel associated with the operation of a small institutional laundry, (b) assists in supervising a portion of the service of a large laundry, or (c) supervises the operation of large linen rooms; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
- Is responsible for proper performance of all laundry operations in an assigned area and for the assignment, direction, instruction, and supervision of laundry employees, patients, and/or inmates.
- Supervises the proper adjustment and minor maintenance of all laundry equipment. Plans, organizes, and assigns work of the organizational unit and evaluates employee performance and conduct, enabling the effective recommendation of the hiring, firing, promoting, and disciplining of subordinates.
- Operates washers, extractors, dryers, water softeners, sterilizers, and other equipment.
- Prepares starches, bluing, and bleaches.
- Prepares sterilizing compound and soap and detergent mixtures.
- Makes alkalinity and acidity tests.
- Operates the water softener and sterilizer.
- Supervises the checking in/out of laundry.
- Prepares requisitions for laundry equipment/materials/supplies.
- Maintains and controls health, sanitary, and safety conditions within the laundry.
- Keeps records of laundry operations, personnel, time spent, and materials used.
- When acting as supervisor of large linen rooms:
- Checks requisitions for clothing/linens and sees that sufficient supplies are on hand at all times.
- Makes arrangements for the quick delivery of linens when emergencies arise.
- Prepares reports.
- Maintains linen room records.
- May be required to undergo fire training classes.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Three (3) years of experience in a commercial or institution laundry.
License
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of laundry methods/practices involved in the processing of different types of materials.
- Knowledge of and skill in the operation/maintenance of washers, dryers, extractors, presses, water softeners, sterilizers, and other laundry equipment.
- Knowledge of the preparation and use of various types of laundering compounds/solutions.
- Ability to operate and supervise operation of commercial type laundry equipment including washers, extractors, dryers, tumblers, and presses.
- Ability to select the appropriate washing soaps, detergents, bleaches, rinses, and water temperatures for specific types of laundry.
- Ability to assign and supervise laundry and linen room employees and assigned patients/inmates.
- Ability to instruct employees in the inspection, sorting, marking, checking, folding, and distribution of laundry.
- Ability to instruct patients/inmates in proper use of sewing machines for mending.
- Ability to prepare reports.
- Ability to prepare records of laundry operations, personnel, time spent, and materials used.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
