Definition

Under the supervision of a Head Dairy Worker or other supervisory officer in a correctional institution in the Department of Corrections, performs the work involved in the operation of a dairy; does related work as required.

Examples of work

  • Organizes assigned dairy farm work and develops effective work methods.
  • Assigns, instructs, and directs the work activities of inmates assigned to the dairy.
  • Feeds, cares for, and slaughters dairy animals for beef.
  • Milks and strips cows.
  • Oversees the refrigeration, pasteurization, and canning of milk.
  • Cleans and sterilizes dairy utensils and equipment.
  • Keeps the cow barns, dairy buildings and environs clean.
  • Assists in breeding the dairy herd, and feeds and cares for the growing stock.
  • Assists in caring for other farm stock, including pigs and fowl, as required.
  • Prepares reports concerning dairy activities and progress.
  • May be required to undergo fire training classes.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information system used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

One (1) year of work experience on a dairy farm involving the care and feeding of dairy cattle.

License

Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

  • Knowledge of the techniques used to feed and care for dairy cattle.
  • Knowledge of dairy equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Knowledge of the techniques used to milk cows and of pasteurization and sterilization procedures.
  • Knowledge of animal husbandry.
  • Knowledge of breeding problems and of the proper care of heifers and calves.
  • Ability to analyze, comprehend, and interpret dairy farm problems.
  • Ability to assign, instruct, and direct the work activities of inmates assigned to the dairy.
  • Ability to feed and care for dairy cattle and calves.
  • Ability to milk and strip cows.
  • Ability to breed cattle.
  • Ability to clean and maintain dairy buildings, cattle barns, and other dairy equipment.
  • Ability to prepare reports concerning dairy activities and progress.
  • Ability to maintain files and records.
  • Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
