Definition
Under the direction of a supervisory officer in a penal, correctional or other institution in the Department of Corrections, has charge of the institution dairy and the care, custody and instruction of inmates, patients and others employed in the dairy; does other related duties.
Examples of work
- Assigns and instructs employees, inmates, patients or others assigned to the dairy and supervises the performance of their work.
- Supervises the work operations and/or functional programs and has responsibility for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting and/or disciplining of employees.
- Prepares daily work schedules for employees having custody of the inmates, patients or others assigned to dairy duties.
- Supervises the selection of food types, the weighing and mixing of dairy rations, and the feeding of the cattle.
- Supervises and takes the lead in the washing of udders, the brushing of the cows, and the milking and stripping.
- Supervises and takes the lead in the sterilization of dairy utensils and cans used in the pasteurization, cooling and canning of the milk.
- Breeds the dairy herd, selects sires according to bloodlines for each animal, and feeds and cares for the growing stock.
- Supervises the cleaning of the dairy and other buildings.
- Feeds, cares for, and slaughters dairy animals for beef.
- Takes measures for the control and treatment of mastitis and other diseases and provides minor veterinary treatments to cattle.
- Maintains inventory of supplies.
- Takes the measures to ensure the safety, custody and progress of inmates, patients or others assigned to the dairy.
- Obtains, stores, safeguards and records use of dairy equipment, materials and supplies.
- Reports suspicious behavior and activities so that appropriate action is taken.
- Prepares activity and progress reports. Maintains files and records.
- May be required to undergo fire-training classes.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Two (2) years of experience on a dairy farm involving the care and feeding of dairy cattle, one (1) year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity involving dairy management activities.
License
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

- Knowledge of the techniques used in the care of dairy cattle.
- Knowledge of dairy equipment, materials and supplies.
- Knowledge of the problems encountered in the management of a dairy.
- Knowledge of the techniques used to milk cows and of pasteurization and sterilization procedures.
- Knowledge of animal husbandry.
- Ability to plan, organize and assign the activities of a dairy.
- Ability to direct the work activities of inmates, patients or others.
- Ability to provide minor veterinary treatments and recognize the symptoms of diseases affecting cattle.
- Ability to supervise the care and custody of the inmates, patients or others assigned to the dairy.
- Ability to supervise the maintenance and service activities of dairy buildings, cattle barns, and other dairy equipment.
- Ability to prepare reports concerning dairy activities and progress.
- Ability to maintain files and records.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
