Definition

Under the supervision of a supervisory officer performs miscellaneous industrial and/or crafts work; does related work as required.

Examples of work

  • Assists in the repair of upholstery.
  • Assists in the warehousing of a variety of hand crafts.
  • Mends torn linens, and clothing.
  • Cuts material for clothing.
  • Makes repairs on shoes and other leather goods.
  • If assigned to a print shop, operates a press and assists in book and pad binding.
  • Collects, weighs, distributes and records laundry issued and received.
  • Assists in providing instructions and guidance in hand crafts.
  • Performs or assists in general maintenance and repair duties in shops.
  • Assists in simple repair and maintenance work in offices, storerooms, libraries and shop areas.
  • Assists in moving, sorting, storing, transferring, filing tapes, books, documents, boxes and other items in offices, storerooms, libraries and shop areas.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.

License

Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of the basic problems likely to exist in industrial production and/or crafts work.
  • Knowledge of methods involved in simple repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to analyze simple maintenance and repair problems, organize assigned work and develop effective work methods.
  • Ability to learn general maintenance and repair work under supervision.
  • Ability to move, sort, store, transfer and file assorted materials.
  • Ability to acquire skill in hand crafts.
  • Ability to store, safeguard, record, and properly use equipment, materials, supplies and tools.
  • Ability to maintain records.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
