Definition
Under the general supervisor in the Division of Developmental Disabilities, Department of Human Services, supervises the work of a group of Social Workers, I, and II and/or performs the field and office work involved in conducting investigations, collecting, analyzing and recording significant social facts about developmentally disabled persons, and providing recommendations for corrective actions; does other related work.
Examples of work
Coordinates the work of the Social Service unit with other units of the Division, Field Services, other institutions, and with Federal, State and Municipal agencies. Provides referrals to community resources for the developmentally disabled. Prepares home study reports of persons awaiting admission to, or residents of, State Developmental Disabilities facilities and those persons released to foster home and family care placement. Implements interim planning programs for developmentally disabled persons awaiting admission to residential facilities. Visits clinics, hospitals, social and welfare agencies, relatives, physicians, and others to collect the social, economic and other information required to prepare recommendations for determinations of eligibility and classification for particular services. Supervises the preparation of social histories for diagnostic purposes and rehabilitation purposes. Provides information in person, orally and in writing. Schedules casework visits to the homes and families of clients to discuss the treatment program. Plans and institutes program designed to prepare residents for community living. Supervises the gathering of all material to process applications from the services of the Division of Developmental Disabilities. Services a case load and prepares histories and reports. Assists in the supervision of individuals released from residential facilities for the developmentally disabled. Visits prospective employers and others to develop an understanding of the problems of individual patients. Prepares correspondence. Prepares and supervises the preparation of case histories and other reports. Maintains records and files. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
License
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge the services and programs likely to be needed by the developmentally disabled. Knowledge of the social work theory and methods for the developmentally disabled. Knowledge of the methods used to collect and analyze data. Knowledge of interviewing techniques. Ability to conduct field and other site visits. Ability to provide referrals to community resources. Ability to compile and analyze data and information. Ability to plan and identify the programs and services required by the developmentally disabled. Ability to prepare reports and correspondence. Ability to maintain records and files. Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. Persons with mental or physical disabilities are eligible as long as they can perform essential functions of the job after reasonable accommodation is made to their known limitations. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience. Six (6) years of professional experience in social case work in a social service program for the developmentally disabled. OR Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and two (2) years of the above-mentioned professional experience. OR Possession of a master's degree in a field related to social work; and one (1) year of the above-mentioned professional experience. "Professional experience" refers to work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the authority to act according to one's own judgment and make accurate and informed decisions.
