Definition
Under general supervision of a Social Work Supervisor in a psychiatric clinic, institution, or bureau under the jurisdiction of the Division of Mental Health Services, Department of Human Services, acts as a case consultant or supervises the work of a group of Social Workers 1 and 2 (Psychiatric) or, performs varied tasks involved in assisting adults and children to make satisfactory social and emotional adjustments; does other related work.
Examples of work
Organizes assigned psychiatric social work and develops effective work methods. Provides assignments to the Social Workers 1 and 2, (Psychiatric) and supervises their work. Plans, organizes, and assigns the work of the organizational unit and evaluates employee performance and conduct, enabling the effective recommendation of the hiring, firing, promoting, and disciplining of subordinates. Instructs Social Workers 1 and 2 (Psychiatric) in the methods and practices used to conduct studies for the effecting social treatment of clients. Supervises intake procedures and the establishment of records and files. As required, supervises students engaged in field work practice, integrates their class work with field work practice and experience, and maintains cooperative working relationships with the school of social work. Confers with the Social Work Supervisors, (Psychiatric) and assists in supervising a program designed to provide professional progress for social work staff. Encourages staff to attend social work conferences and participate in the activities of professional associations and community social agencies. Keeps abreast of literature in the field of social work and psychiatric social work. Compiles and arranges material for publication in professional journals and for papers dealing with social work problems and methods of effective social study and treatment. Assigns specific subjects for research to members of the psychiatric social work staff, acts in an advisory capacity in the development of studies, and compiles material prepared by staff members assigned to the same research project. Instructs casework staff in the policies and practices of the Department. Prepares and supervises the preparation of psychiatric and other reports. Supervises the maintenance of records and files. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in NJ only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of the methods used for the mental and emotional rehabilitation, physical welfare, social adjustment, and possible employment of persons who are mentally, emotionally, and/or socially maladjusted. Knowledge of mental health theories, methods and practices. Knowledge of the problems encountered in applying the concepts, methods, and procedures of present-day social work, psychology, mental health, and psychiatry to mentally ill persons. Knowledge of the methods used to collect social and psychological data concerning patients. Knowledge of the emotional, social, economic and other problems encountered by the client population served. Knowledge of the nature and symptoms of mental diseases and the more common neuroses and methods of treatment. Ability to train psychiatric social work staff to locate and utilize available and potential community resources in the adjustment of patients. Ability to supervise appropriate intake procedures and to develop and maintain cooperative community relationships. Ability to supervise students engaged in fieldwork practice, integrate their class work with fieldwork, and maintain effective relationships with schools of social work. Ability to help participate in the development of programs to provide professional progress to the social work staff. Ability to compile and arrange data for publication. Ability to assign and supervise the development of research studies. Ability to prepare correspondence. Ability to prepare reports. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience. Six (6) years of professional experience in psychiatric social case work, including gathering and disseminating client information and the development and implementation of individualized and client oriented treatment plans. OR Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and two (2) years of the above-mentioned professional experience. OR Possession of a master's degree from an accredited college or university in a field related to social work; and one (1) year of the above-mentioned professional experience. "Professional experience" refers to work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the authority to act according to one's own judgment and make accurate and informed decisions.
