Definition
Under the supervision of a Social Work Supervisor Secured Facilities of a higher grade in an adult or juvenile correctional institution or other agency supervises the work of a group of Social Workers 1 and 2, performs the more difficult tasks in providing counseling, assessment and program planning services to inmates or juvenile offenders and coordinates referrals to other institutional and community resources; does other related duties.
Examples of work
Supervises the work operations and/or functional programs and has responsibility for employee evaluations and for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting and/or disciplining of employees. Supervises activities and procedures of social work staff and institutional, inter-department and community programs that identify, assess and recommend treatment for substance abuse for inmates. Provides assignments and instructions to social work staff and supervises the performance of their work. Instructs social work staff in treatment policy and procedure in corrections. Reviews and checks inmate case histories and other reports prepared by Social Work staff. Instructs Social Workers 1 and 2 in the methods used to conduct social studies for the effective treatment of inmates in a correctional institution or a community based setting. Coordinates other para-professional and/or professional resources in the pursuit of treatment objectives for inmates. Supervises social work intake procedures and the formation of proper correctional institutional and community relationships, which are a part of an inmate's treatment plan. In a community based corrections program, supervises social work staff in utilizing community resources for social reintegration of ex-offenders. Keeps informed of developments in methods of treatment in the field of social work and corrections. Under the direction of a Social Work Supervisor Secured Facilities of a higher grade develops and supervises professional enrichment programs for social work staff using inter- departmental and professional resources. Compiles and arranges material for professional journals and internal publications on methods, problems and developments of treatment in corrections. When required, supervises and coordinates fieldwork experience for graduate and undergraduate students. Supervises the maintenance of records and files. Will be required to lean to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
License
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of the methods and treatments used to rehabilitate social offenders. Knowledge of social work theories and practices. Knowledge of the problems encountered in applying concepts, methods and procedures of present day social work and psychology to the treatment of incarcerated inmates or released ex- offenders. Knowledge of the methods used to collect, organize and record factual, social and psychological data concerning individual social offenders. Knowledge of the emotional, social, economic, and other problems encountered by the client population served. Knowledge of the symptoms and behavior patterns that indicate substance abuse, and of appropriate treatment modalities. Ability to organize social work activities and develop effective work methods. Ability to schedule and provide assignments and provide instructions and guidance to social work staff. Ability to apply the concepts, methods and procedures of present day treatment in corrections to incarcerated inmates and participate in community based correctional programs. Ability to supervise the collection, organization and recording of factual, social, and psychological data of inmates into clear, concise, accurate and informative histories for use in diagnosis and treatment. Ability to train social work staff to locate and utilize available and potential community resources for the treatment of inmates. Ability to supervise intake procedures and working relationships with other institutional and community resources. Ability to set up programs in a community based facility and to provide resources for social re-integration of ex-offenders. Ability to supervise institutional activities of graduate and undergraduate students involved in educational required fieldwork experience. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with respective schools of social work. Ability to participate in the development of professional enrichment programs for the social work staff. Ability to compile and arrange data for publication. Ability to prepare correspondence. Ability to prepare and supervise the preparation of reports. Ability to supervise the maintenance of records and files. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience. Six (6) years of professional experience in the delivery of social work services to social offenders and providing counseling, assessment program planning and aid in informational and situational problem solving. OR Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and two (2) years of the above-mentioned professional experience. OR Possession of a master's degree from an accredited college or university in a field related to social work; and one (1) year of the above-mentioned professional experience. "Professional experience" refers to work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the authority to act according to one's own judgment and make accurate and informed decisions.
