Definition
Under limited supervision of a Day Care Center Supervisor or other supervisory official in the Department of Children and Families, carries out assigned programs in the areas of physical care, recreation, self-help, social training prevocational training or vocational training of students; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
- Organizes assigned work and develops effective work methods to accommodate the problems encountered with intellectually and/or behaviorally disabled students and/or babies and toddlers in the nursery.
- Assumes responsibility for physical, mental, and emotional well-being of assigned students and/or babies.
- Helps to feed children and/or infants and prepares meals.
- Serves meals to students and feeds those unable to help themselves.
- Dresses, combs hair, changes diapers and provides the type of assistance required by the children to ensure adequate standards of personal hygiene and self-help skills training.
- Maintains a continuous training program in the Reginal School setting with emphasis on self-help skills and, whenever possible, social development as per individual's ability.
- Operates simple machinery and power tools associated with established prevocational and vocational training programs.
- Oversees and trains students in activities involved in subcontract work under approved prevocational and vocational programs.
- Oversees and trains students in work activities such as janitorial, landscaping, and food processing services.
- Helps students in and out of vehicles transporting them to and from the schools.
- May assist with self-help, academic, social, vocational, and recreational activities designed for infants and/or teen mothers.
- May assist a Teacher 1 or 2 in obtaining and preparing materials and equipment for teaching and learning activities.
- May help tutor teen mothers in simple, routine lessons.
- May assist with feeding, bathing, and dressing infants.
- Maintains active recreation programs and participates in outdoor and indoor recreation programs.
- Takes measures to eliminate actual and potential hazards for the safety of all students.
- Maintains order among students in the school and refers unusual and/or serious behavior and disciplinary problems to Day Care Center Supervisor or other supervisory official.
- Escorts students to recreation, activity areas, and other school areas as may be required.
- Notifies the supervisor when irregularities, suspicious conditions, accidents, illness, and/or fires occur.
- When required, may assist with the schools housekeeping activities; rides Regional School buses and assists students on these vehicles, maintains essential vehicle safety measures, and provides mobility training where appropriate.
- Maintains records and prepares reports.
- Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- May be required to engage in lifting students and children when working in a setting which provides direct services to students who are non-ambulant, or who are semi-ambulant and/or have severe physical disabilities.
Experience
One (1) year of experience in the direct care and/or training of intellectually and/or behaviorally disabled children, teenaged mothers and/or infants in an institution, general hospital, or educational setting.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the problems encountered in the nonprofessional care of teenaged mothers and/or infants or, persons in a school for the intellectually and/or behaviorally disabled.
- Knowledge of the housekeeping, safety, and sanitation problems likely to be encountered in a school serving intellectually and/or behaviorally disabled persons or, teenaged mothers and infants.
- Knowledge of the techniques used to train individuals with varying degrees of intellectual and physical disabilities in areas of self-care and socially accepted behavior to the limits of the individual's potential.
- Knowledge of woodworking, ceramic, and clay modeling activities.
- Knowledge of the duties associated with janitorial, landscaping, and food services vocations.
- Knowledge of the physical, mental, and emotional needs of disabled persons.
- Ability to organize assigned center-training work, analyze problems, and develop appropriate work methods.
- Ability to lead and participate in outdoor and indoor recreation activities.
- Ability to dress, bathe, feed and provide other assistance required by students and/or infants to maintain prescribed standards of personal hygiene.
- Ability to feed children who present serious feeding problems.
- Ability to physically lift, move, and position students and/or infants as needed.
- Ability to lift students who are not ambulant or semi-ambulant.
- Ability to follow basic safety precautions for students and/or infants on transportation vehicles.
- Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written instructions and assignments.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with children, adults, teens and co-workers.

- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
