Definition
Under direction of a supervisory official, defines, promotes, and otherwise provides consultative services to public and private medical social services programs; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
- May assist in assessing, planning, promoting, and developing medical social services throughout the state.
- Interprets medical social services and maintains effective working relationships with professional, educational, public, and voluntary agencies and other groups concerned with providing medical social services to achieve coordination on same.
- Plans and helps develop community medical social services, and provides expert technical consultation and guidance.
- Works with community agencies to achieve and maintain professional clinical social work standards.
- Participates in institutes, group meetings, seminars, and inservice and educational training programs, and participates in surveys, studies, and selected demonstration projects.
- May assist in recruitment, selection, and training of medical social work personnel within the department and other agencies.
- Gives talks as may be required.
- Prepares detailed correspondence in the course of official duties.
- Prepares and supervises the preparation of clear, technically sound, accurate, and informative statistical, financial, and other related reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
- Maintains the establishment and maintenance of essential records and files.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Education
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree in Social Work.
Experience
Three (3) years of experience providing consultation, advice, and technical assistance to community organizations and other professionals on social work problems, prevention efforts, problem solving techniques, treatment methods and plans, and case management procedures.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of current methods and techniques of medical social work used in public health and other health and welfare agencies.
- Knowledge of techniques and practical approach used in locating, training, and working with leaders of cooperating and participating agencies to promote medical social work..
- Knowledge of principles and practices of public administration methods in relation to social work.
- Ability to apply standards, policies, rules, and regulations of the State Department of Health and Senior Services to specific situations.
- Ability to plan, coordinate, promote, and evaluate the medical social work component of health services, and to make recommendations to alleviate problem areas based on research and current developments in social work.
- Ability to identify problem areas in social work administration, and develop recommendations to solve these problems based on current standards and assessments of the needs of the health care facility or organization.
- Ability to research solutions to questions concerning social work from health care facilities, or local or county health and welfare organizations.
- Ability to plan, organize, and evaluate medical social work programs.
- Ability to conduct and/or assist in research and demonstration projects.
- Ability to prepare informational material for annual and monthly reports.
- Ability to plan, organize, and carry out programs of orientation and inservice training for staff.
- Ability to coordinate medical social services with other programs of the department and with other public, private, and voluntary health and/or welfare agencies.
- Ability to prepare correspondence in the course of official duties.
- Ability to compile data for and to prepare sound, technically accurate, and comprehensive periodic, statistical, progress, and other reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
