Definition
Under the direction of an administrator, principal, supervisor or Administrative Instructor in a Department of Education state operated school, conducts classroom instruction according to prescribed course of study; is responsible for student educational progress and behavior; does related duties as required.
Examples of work
- Plan, prepare and deliver lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate learning.
- Conducts periods of instruction daily as required to implement the student's individualized plan and as required by the department to which assigned.
- During annual reviews, makes recommendations regarding student's progress and recommend changes in program or placement.
- Maintains up-to-date lesson plans, class rosters, records and instructional materials for use with special needs students.
- Modifies instructions and learning materials according to need.
- May organize and chaperone extra-curricular activities such as field trips, clubs, sporting events and other social activities.
- Identifies instructional supplies as needed in instructional areas to accommodate special needs of students.
- Participates in examination, evaluation and selection of curriculum materials to be used in instruction.
- Submits requests for equipment as needed.
- Prepares confidential reports on each student as required.
- Maintains anecdotal records on individual learning and behavioral/emotional problems.
- Participates in evaluations of prospective students applying for admission, when requested.

Education
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree.
Experience
Four (4) years of teaching experience in the appropriate field of expertise. Experience as a student teacher and/or as a teaching assistant are acceptable forms of teaching experience.
License
Possession of a valid Instructional Certificate with endorsements issued by the New Jersey State Board of Examiners, in subject areas as determined by the Appointing Authority.
<i><b>SPECIAL SKILL:</b> Appointees for the Marie H. Katzenbach School for the Deaf must be able to communicate effectively in the language of the deaf, particularly American Sign Language, sufficiently to perform essential functions of this position.
<b>SPECIAL NOTE:</b> Appointees for Marie H. Katzenbach School for the Deaf must have a proficiency level of at least an Intermediate level and must be able to reach the Advanced or higher-level rating on the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) within two years of appointment.</i>
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

- Knowledge of lesson plans for a balanced curriculum utilizing relevant textbooks, audiovisual aids, and library resources.
- Knowledge of policies, curriculum and courses of study for the educational development of pupils.
