Definition

Under supervision of a Supervisor of Educational Programs or Assistant Supervisor of Educational Programs in a state school or institution, acts as direct care personnel in the classroom and assists with self-help, academic, social, vocational, and recreational activities designed for children and/or young adults; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

  • Assists with self-help, academic, social, vocational, and recreational activities designed for children and/or young adults.
  • Assists a Teacher 1 or 2 in obtaining and preparing materials and equipment for teaching learning activities including paper, pencils, books, arts and crafts materials, charts, pictures, visual demonstration materials, record players, and motion picture, slide, overhead, and opaque projectors.
  • Helps prepare visual aids, updates bulletin boards, and arranges displays of student work.
  • Keeps the classroom in a neat and orderly condition, adjusts room lighting and heating, and arranges chairs and desks as required for different activities.
  • Works individually with developmentally disabled children or adults to develop self-help skills and basic environmental awareness.
  • Accompanies students/clients on outside activities and trips.
  • Helps maintain discipline.
  • Assists in keeping records of attendance, illness, and student performance and behavior.
  • Helps tutor students in simple, routine lessons and assists the teacher by rotating among small groups of students involved in discussion, arts and crafts, and/or recreation activities and gives guidance to such activities.
  • Distributes and collects paper, books, and other teaching materials.
  • Assists the teacher when emergency situations arise including illness, accidents, or fire.
  • Transports students/clients between residences and classrooms.
  • Keeps routine records and reports.
  • If emergency accidents occur in the classroom, commences initial cleaning of the classroom and/or of students as a precautionary measure.
  • In extreme circumstances of individual accidents, escorts the student from the classroom to the residence or designated emergency location.
  • May be required to engage in lifting clients when working in a setting which provides direct services to clients who are non-ambulant or who are semi-ambulant and/or have severe physical disabilities.
  • Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

Knowledge of the emotional, personal, adjustment, and other problems of children and young adults confined in an institution or enrolled in a DCF Regional School. Ability to learn quickly from oral and written directions, explanations, and from demonstrations. Ability to assist a professional teacher by performing routine duties involved in academic, social, vocational, and recreational activities. Ability to obtain and prepare varied types of equipment and materials for teaching learning activities including arts and craft materials, paper, pencils, books, pictures, visual aids, record players, and projectors. Ability to help keep the classroom in a neat and orderly condition and arrange chairs and desks for different activities. Ability to take necessary actions concerning initial cleaning of the classroom and/or student when emergency accidents occur. Ability to assist in maintaining discipline. Ability to tutor students in routine lessons. Ability to act as general assistant to a professional teacher and follow established measures when emergencies arise such as removing the student from the classroom for personal hygiene reasons. Ability to maintain routine records, reports, and files. Ability to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
