Definition

Under the direction of the Music Department Chairperson at a State College in the Department of Higher Education, is responsible for the audio recording of all events sponsored by the Music Department, special audition recordings for professors and students, sets up concert equipment for performances, makes minor repairs of audio equipment, musical instruments, and supervises the Music Department Listening Library; does related work as required.

Examples of work

• Operates all technical equipment in the Music Department.
• Installs reel-to-reel recorders, cassette recorders, permanent suspended microphone systems, multi-channel microphone mixing equipment, patch bays, and other audio equipment.
• Installation and compliance measurements of manufacturer's recommended modifications on all equipment.
• Performs all audio recording work for the Music Department in accordance with internationally recognized practices as established by the Audio Engineering Society.
• Performs audio tape duplication using reel-to-reel, and cassette recording equipment.
• Produces 1/2 hour segments of recorded tapes for broadcast by the College Radio Station, includes the research of department tape archives, re-recording of selected material onto tape copy controlling dynamic levels, performs editing, precision timing, and leadering of completed tape packages.
• Provides broadcast announcer with information copy including titles of selected pieces, composer, performing groups, director, time of running length, speed of tape, trackage of tape.
• Supervises the arranging and disassembling of concert equipment and stage preparations according to established practice for type of group performing.
• Performs coordination of all equipment movement between campus and off-campus buildings as necessary.
• Diagnoses and performs minor repairs to technical equipment and musical instrumnents.
• Checks all musical equipment for wear, checks playback amplifiers on electronic pianos, maintains piano lab student-teacher communication system in proper working order, reports conditions of instruments to department chairperson.
• Acts as Supervisor of Music Department Listening Library.
• Researches, prepares ordering forms and orders all electronic equipment to be purchased by department.
• Trains and supervises all student workers assigned to and working for the Music Department.
• Assigns Music Department equipment to all college and non-college organizations as approved through chairperson and maintains complete files on such activity.
• Maintains inventory on technical and musical equipment located in Music Department.
• Assists the chairperson as required.
• Prepares factual reports.
• May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Education

Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor's degree in Music.

Experience

Two (2) years experience in audio recording, including concert preparation and maintenance of electronic equipment.

License

Member of Audio Engineering Society or other recognized society of professional recording engineers.

Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge in audio recording as relates to record production, in association with recordings of groups or individuals for publishing possibilities.
• Knowledge of musical instruments, their volume levels, projection characteristics, blend characteristics with other instruments and ability to put such knowledge into practical use in audio recording.
• Knowledge in audio tape editing and splicing.
• Knowledge in audio recording procedures.
• Knowledge of concert stage preparations including concerts, recitals, festivals, and rehearsals.
• Ability to produce tape packages to radio stations including researching archives, line level re-recording of selected material, editing, splicing, precise timing, and leadering of completed packages.
• Ability in the modification of stereo portable listening systems for upgrading.
• Ability to completely diagnose and prepare microphone set-up patterns and locations and assemble audio recording chain in preparation of recording events, following established practices of National Association of Broadcasters and AES.
• Ability to diagnose and perform minor repair to audio recording equipment, musical instruments, playback systems, audio, and closed circuit television systems, etc.
• Ability to coordinate and execute special projects with other audio services on campus.
• Ability to acquire knowledge of Department Music Library, its holding, cataloging procedures, operating procedures, and problems involved in day-to-day operation of library and ability to effectively perform the same.
• Ability to assemble edited tapes without audio interruption.
• Ability to operate the following: Multi-channel reel-to-reel tape recorder, reproducers, with and without sync track, microprocessor and non-microprocessor controlled cassette recording apparatus, professional studio microphone systems.
• Ability to operate audio patch bays, operate multi-channel audio mixing equipment, studio monitoring systems, stereo phonograph playback systems, sound reinforcement systems.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
