Which union represents your title
Union representation in New Jersey state government does not follow the department you work in. It follows your Employee Relations Group, and your ERG is the letter or number at the front of your salary range code. A title paid on range P22 sits in ERG P; a title paid on FA17 sits in ERG FA. The ERG is what the State negotiates with, so two people doing similar work in the same building can be in different bargaining units if their titles are paid on different schedules.
Reading that off a job specification is the quickest route. Open any title on this site, find the salary range on the specification, and take the letters before the digits. ERGs A, P, R, S and G are CWA. ERG H is AFSCME. ERGs C, I and O are IFPTE. The ampersand ERG and ZR are IBEW, which represents managers and deputy attorneys general. The law enforcement ERGs (L, F, FA and the numeric superior-officer groups) are split among the PBA and the several state law enforcement associations, and the Judiciary ERGs (B, U, 5, 6, 7 and the dollar-sign group) run through PANJ, OPEIU and the JCAU coalition.
Of the titles in this database, 2,901 carry a salary code that maps to a bargaining unit, and 2,243 of those are CWA — more than every other union combined. Most of the titles with no union shown are local jurisdiction titles, where pay is set by municipal or county ordinance rather than a State schedule, so there is no State ERG to read. Local employees are frequently unionized; the contract is just negotiated locally. See how local jurisdiction titles work.

Know your rights
What are Weingarten Rights?
The right of union-represented employees to have a union representative present during investigatory interviews that could lead to discipline. You must REQUEST representation - it is not automatic.
How do I file a grievance?
Start by discussing the issue with your supervisor informally. If unresolved, file a written grievance with your union steward, who will guide you through the formal process including management response, appeals, and potential arbitration.
What is collective bargaining?
The process by which unions negotiate with employers on behalf of workers for wages, benefits, and working conditions. In NJ, this is governed by the Employer-Employee Relations Act and administered by PERC.
How do I find my union?
Your union is determined by your Employee Relations Group (ERG) code, which is part of your salary range code. For example, salary range P22 indicates ERG 'P' which is represented by CWA.
Two of these are worth stating plainly because they are the ones people get wrong. Weingarten representation is not automatic — an employer is under no obligation to offer it, and the right attaches only once you ask for it, so the request itself is the whole protection. And a grievance has deadlines: contract grievance windows are measured in days from the event, not from when you decided to act, so the informal conversation with a supervisor should not be allowed to run long enough to spend the filing window.
Discipline, layoffs and workplace discrimination are governed by regulation as well as by contract. N.J.A.C. Title 4A Chapter 2 covers major and minor discipline and the appeal routes, Chapter 8 covers layoffs and the rights that attach to them, and N.J.S.A. Title 11A is the statute all of it rests on. A union contract can add protection on top of those rules; it cannot take away what they grant.
Where the pay comes from
Each bargaining unit's negotiated pay lands in the annual Compensation Compendium as a step schedule: a grid of salary ranges by step, with a fixed increment between steps. Several schedules are frozen at older effective dates and carry no step movement at all, which matters more to take-home pay than the headline range does. Read the current compendium figures, or open a salary schedule to see the actual steps for a range.
