How New Jersey firefighter promotional exams work for lieutenant, captain, and chief ranks, and where the study material stands.
The entry-level firefighter exam gets you into the firehouse. Moving up runs through a different process. Promotion in a Civil Service fire department is governed by promotional examinations, and they are not the test you took to get hired.
The most important thing to know up front is that a promotional exam assumes you already do the job below the one you are testing for. It is far more about command, supervision, and fire service practice than raw aptitude.
The rank ladder
Above firefighter, the competitive ladder in a Civil Service fire department runs through Fire Lieutenant, Fire Captain, and into chief officer ranks including Deputy Fire Chief and Fire Chief. Each rank is its own title with its own promotional examination, and eligibility is usually limited to people already serving in the rank below, often with a minimum time in grade.
How promotional exams differ
A promotional firefighter exam tests supervision, incident command, department policy, and fire service knowledge as it is actually applied, rather than the general reading and reasoning the entry test measures. Seniority typically carries weight in the final score alongside the written result. You generally cannot test into a rank from outside the department, which is what makes these exams different in kind from the open competitive entry exam.
