NJ Civil Service Eligibility Lists

Learn about NJ Civil Service eligible lists: how they work, how long they last, and how to find your standing after passing an exam.

What Is an Eligibility List?

An eligibility list (also called an eligible list) is a ranked roster of candidates who have passed a NJ Civil Service examination and are eligible for appointment to a specific job title. Lists are maintained by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission and used by state and local government agencies to fill vacancies.

How Long Do Eligibility Lists Last?

Most eligible lists remain active for three to four years from the date of establishment. During this period, agencies may appoint candidates from the list to fill open positions. Once a list expires or is exhausted, a new examination must be held.

Types of Lists

  • Open Competitive — Open to any qualified applicant who passes the exam.
  • Promotional — Restricted to current government employees meeting specific tenure and title requirements.
  • Reemployment — For former civil servants who were laid off (RIF) and maintain reinstatement rights.
  • Special Reemployment — For veterans and employees displaced by agency reorganizations.
