NJ Civil Service Exam Study Guides
By NJ Civil Service Navigator Editorial Team · Updated July 19, 2026
Every exam-prep study guide this site links to, in one place: title-specific subject guides, general aptitude practice, and law enforcement and supervisory battery guides for New Jersey Civil Service exams.
The New Jersey Civil Service Commission does not publish an official study guide, does not release past exam questions, and does not endorse any commercial test prep product. Everything on this page is independent, third-party material: Passbooks exam guides published by the National Learning Corporation, sold on Amazon. Buying one gives you no advantage in an examination and no inside information about it — it gives you equivalency practice, written to the same subject and roughly the same format as a New Jersey exam, not the New Jersey exam itself.
This page collects every guide this site links to, in one place, organized by what it actually prepares you for. If you landed on a specific job specification or exam guide, the book recommended there was matched to that title or exam type specifically. This page is for browsing the full set, or for finding something when a title-specific match doesn't exist for your position.
How to pick the right one
What's worth buying depends entirely on what kind of exam you're sitting, not on how popular a title is.
Title-specific subject guides
If you're testing for a title with real subject matter — an accountant, an engineer, a caseworker — a subject guide written for that occupation is the most defensible purchase. It won't match New Jersey's exact question bank, but reviewing the subject matter itself has real value. Read the job specification's Knowledge & Abilities section first; it tells you what's actually being tested, and it's free.
General aptitude and skills guides
Clerical, administrative, and entry-level titles are frequently tested on transferable skills: arithmetic, reading comprehension, grammar, interpreting tables and charts. These skills don't vary by state, so a general aptitude drill book is reasonable value regardless of which specific title you applied for.
Law enforcement guides
Entry-level New Jersey law enforcement titles use the Law Enforcement Examination, built on a cognitive aptitude battery rather than the memorization-heavy municipal police test most mainstream police exam books were written for. The entry-level guide on this page is matched to that format. Promotional exams (sergeant, lieutenant, captain, and similar) are a different, rank-specific test, and are listed separately below.
Supervisory and management battery guides
If your title sits on New Jersey's Supervisory Test Battery or Management Test Battery, the exam tests supervisory or management judgment, not the technical content of your job. A battery-specific guide, not a subject guide, is what applies here — see the test preparation guide for the full published title lists.
Education and experience evaluations
Some titles aren't tested with a written exam at all — your score comes from a structured review of your background. There's nothing on this page worth buying for that; what matters is a complete, well-documented application.

Common questions
Are these official New Jersey Civil Service study guides?
No. The Civil Service Commission does not publish, sell, or endorse any study guide. These are independent, commercially published guides sold on Amazon. Buying one confers no advantage in an examination and no inside information about it.
Which guide should I buy for my exam?
It depends on what your title actually tests. Start with the job specification's Knowledge & Abilities section, which is free and tells you what's covered. A subject-specific guide helps for occupational exams; a general aptitude guide helps for clerical and entry-level skills tests; a battery guide applies only if your title sits on the Supervisory or Management Test Battery.
Do these guides guarantee I'll pass?
No guide can guarantee that, and any product implying otherwise is misrepresenting itself. New Jersey doesn't release its question bank, so these are equivalency practice, not a preview of your specific exam.
Why isn't there a guide for my exact title?
National Learning Corporation, the publisher behind this catalog, doesn't publish a guide for every civil service title that exists. Where no title-specific match exists, the general aptitude guides are the closest fit for skills-based portions of an exam.
