Definition
Under direction, performs air pollution inspection work involved in the enforcement of relevant laws within the concerned municipality; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Provides knowledge of air pollution control measures and techniques.
- Receives and investigates complaints.
- Makes necessary recommendations and referrals to the State Air Pollution Control Commission.
- When violations are found, determines the cause and takes proper corrective action.
- Gives testimony in court cases.
- Prepares suitable reports.
- Maintains necessary records and files.
Education
Appointees may be required to successfully complete courses or training in air pollution control. Failure to do so may be cause for dismissal. Permanent employees will have the right of appeal to the Department of Personnel.
License
If the position requires sanitary inspection work, possession of a valid Sanitary Inspector License of the appropriate grade issued by the New Jersey Department of Health is required.
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the problems and procedures involved in air pollution inspection work.
- Ability to interpret relevant laws and apply them to specific cases.
- Ability to work harmoniously with concerned persons.
- Ability to establish and maintain proper relationships with business proprietors and others interested in and/or concerned with the maintenance of air pollution control standards.
- Ability to take a firm and correct stand when needed
- Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate and informative reports of inspections containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
- Ability to act as a convincing witness in court and to maintain necessary records and files.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
