Definition

Under direction, assists the Chief Stationary Engineer in supervising the operation and maintenance of the power and heating plants and auxiliary equipment, which may include air conditioning and refrigeration equipment; does other related duties.

Examples of work

• Assists the Chief Stationary Engineer in planning the work programs and providing assignments and instructions to employees engaged in the work relating to the operation and maintenance of boilers, engines, motors, and auxiliary equipment in power and heating plants.
• Develops plans for the use of personnel, equipment, materials, and supplies.
• Coordinates the operation, maintenance, repair and adjustment to varied types of generators, motors, compressors, feed and vacuum pumps, feed conveyors, blowers, water conditioners, and automatic stokers.
• Coordinates the periodic tests and readings of fuel consumption, pressure, draft conditions, temperature, steam flow, and other recordings.
• Inspects and checks safety units.
• Obtains, stores, safeguards, distributes, and oversees the use of needed equipment, materials, and supplies.
• Establishes and maintains records and logs.
• May supervise the operation and maintenance of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Four (4) years of experience involving the operation, maintenance, and repair of power and heating plants and auxiliary equipment.

License

Applicants are required to possess an Operating Engineer's license of the appropriate grade and type, issued by the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce development.

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge of the methods used in the operation and maintenance of power and heating plants and auxiliary equipment.
• Knowledge of the methods used to operate, maintain repair and adjustment varied types of feed and vacuum pumps, generators and motors, feed conveyors, blowers, and automatic stokers.
• Knowledge of the methods used to conduct periodic readings and tests of fuel consumption, pressure, draft conditions, temperature, steam flow, and other recordings.
• Knowledge of the methods used to inspect power and heating plants and auxiliary equipment.
• Knowledge of the methods used to note hazards and analyze and determine repairs.
• Knowledge of the methods to lubricate and clean machinery and equipment.
• Ability to develop operating procedures and work methods.
• Ability to provide assignments and instructions and guidance to staff.
• Ability to supervise and work involved in the operation and maintenance of varied types of boilers, engines, motors, and auxiliary equipment in power and heating plants.
• Ability to supervise the operation, maintenance, repair and adjustment to varied types of feed and vacuum pumps, generators, and motors, feed conveyors, blowers, and automatic stokers.
• Ability to coordinate periodic readings and tests are taken of fuel consumptions, pressure, draft conditions, temperature, steam flow, and other recordings.
• Ability to inspect varied types of equipment used in power and heating plants.
• Ability to note hazards and other significant conditions and determine the nature of needed repairs.
• Ability to supervise the cleaning and lubrication of machinery and equipment.
• Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, distribute, and supervise the proper use of needed equipment, materials, and supplies.
• Ability to establish and maintain records and files.
• Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
