Definition

Under the direction of the Director of Public Health Nursing Service, participates in the planning, organization, and coordination of the Public Health Nursing Service in the community; does related work as required.

Examples of work

• Assists in the planning and coordination of the public health nursing service based on community needs.
• Recommends policy and procedures regarding public health nursing.
• Prepares reports and correspondence.
• Coordinates program operations and services with those of other agencies.
• Conducts studies and surveys.
• Refers cases for other needed medical, social or mental health services.
• Participates in the establishment of consultation and clinic stations.
• Coordinates aid to physicians in the public health program.
• Evaluates public health nursing services; recommends changes when appropriate.
• Supervises the work operations and staff, evaluates employee performance, and recommends the hiring, firing, promoting and disciplining of employees.
• Gathers and disseminates public health information.
• Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with those interested or involved in the work of the programs.
• Participates in public health associations and organizations.
• Keeps current with changing trends in public health nursing.
• Establishes and maintains records and files.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Education

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Public Health or, a Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited School of Nursing.

Experience

Four (4) years of experience in public health nursing, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.

License

Applicants must possess a current, valid registration as a professional nurse in the State of New Jersey.

NOTE REGARDING PROMOTIONS:

The next higher level position, Director of Public Health Nursing Service, requires a Master's degree in Public Health or, a Master's degree in Nursing from an accredited School of Nursing in accordance with regulations established by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services. Applicants who wish to be considered for this higher position MUST possess this level of education.

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
