Definition
Under direction assists the Maintenance Superintendent in supervising maintenance work of a department or autonomous government agency; does other related duties.
Examples of work
- Participates in the planning and supervision of a variety of maintenance programs.
- Provides assignments and instruction to assigned employees.
- Reviews work in progress and completed assignments for conformance with trade practices, plans, and specifications and quality standards.
- May supervise work involved in cleaning and maintenance of offices, buildings, and grounds and in the operation of elevators.
- Supervise a variety of maintenance repair tasks such as carpentry, plumbing, mechanical work, and the maintenance of parks and public property.
- May plan and coordinate improvements, alterations, and repairs to buildings and other structures.
- Prepares plans, detailed drawings, and cost/time estimates for projected work.
- Provides information used to prepare the budget for maintenance programs.
- May prepare and check specifications for bids, supplies, and equipment.
- Supervises the storage and distribution of equipment and supplies.
- Prepares reports.
- Established and maintains records and files.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Four (4) years of experience in work involving a variety of maintenance and repair tasks, three (3) years of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the methods used in building maintenance, alteration and repair.
- Knowledge of the variety of semi-skilled trades used in building maintenance and repair.
- Knowledge of building and safety codes.
- Knowledge of the equipment, used in building maintenance and repair.
- Knowledge of the methods used to obtain, store, safeguard and distribute equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Ability to interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications.
- Ability to identify and correct maintenance problems.
- Ability to provide assignments and instruction to subordinates.
- Ability to plan and supervise a variety of maintenance and repair tasks.
