Definition
Under direction, assists the Supervisor of Water Distribution in supervising the work involved in the maintenance, repair, and installation of water mains, pipes, pumps, valves, steampipes, and other components of a water distribution system; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Assigns, reviews, and supervises the work of a group of employees who are engaged in the maintenance, repair, and installation of facilities in a water distribution system.
- Issues work orders for improvements and additions to the water distribution system.
- Assists in the supervision of the maintenance and repair of distribution mains, standpipes, fire hydrants, water meters, and other components of a water distribution system.
- Periodically checks all water distribution installations and notes significant observations.
- Troubleshoots breakdowns in the distribution system.
- Oversees the obtaining, storing, and safeguarding of materials and supplies.
- Traces leaks and supervises emergency repairs.
- Assists in the preparation of drawings and specifications for additions and repairs to the system.
- Maintains records and files.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Two years of experience in the construction, maintenance, repair, and inspection of water installations.
License
Appointees may be required to possess a current and valid Public Water Distribution System Operator License of the appropriate class issued by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the proper procedures used in making routine and complex repairs to water mains, pipes, and appurtenances.
- Knowledge of the methods of opening and closing streets and the safety precautions relating thereto.
- Knowledge of the varied types of tools used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of water installations.
- Ability to analyze work projects and develop effective work methods.
- Ability to analyze regulating laws, rules, policies, and apply them to specific cases.
- Ability to plan, coordinate and supervise the work of the water distribution system.
- Ability to provide appropriate assignments and instructions to staff, and supervise their work performance.
- Ability to work harmoniously with associates and subordinates.
- Ability to prepare clear, accurate, and informative reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
- Ability to establish and maintain records and files.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
