Definition
Under the direction of a State Veterinarian or other supervisory official, New Jersey Racing Commission, Department of Law and Public Safety, collects human or Standardbred or thoroughbred urine, labels and ensure the integrity of the sample, witnesses the collection of the samples and; assistsunder the direction of the State Veterinarian the collection of blood from equines and; maintains the evidence custody chain of the urine/blood samples at the licensed New Jersey racing facility.

Examples of work
- Assists the State Veterinarian or associate Veterinarians in the taking of blood samples from equines in the pre-race testing program to insure the integrity of horse racing in the State of New Jersey.
- Collects urine samples from equines and licensees deemed by the Racing Stewarts in accordance with established Commission rules and procedures and maintains the evidence custody chain.
- Assists the Commission veterinarians in performing physical examinations on equines and in administering the Lasix medication program.
- Testifies, as required at administrative hearings with regard to the collecting or witnessing of the collection of human or equine blood or urine testing when a positive is detected.
- Records and maintains records of blood or urine samples to insure the accuracy of information which may be used at administrative hearings.
- Maintains evidence custody chain by transporting samples to State Police Laboratories.
- Oversees equines in the detention barn and is alert to their handling in order to assist in preventing the drugging of those equines in the detention barn.
- Maintains essential records and files.
- May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
Experience
One (1) year experience in grooming or handling of horses on the race track or farm.
NOTE: Appointee(s) must be actual resident of the State of New Jersey.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
