Definition

Under direction, has charge of and supervises the repair and maintenance work of the boardwalk and beach area; does related work as required.

Examples of work

• Plans and supervises a variety of maintenance and repair programs to the boardwalk and beach area.
• Supervises the capping of piles, placing of stringers, decking, erecting pipe railings, painting railings and pavilions, and repairing and replacing sections of the boardwalk.
• Removes debris from beaches and surrounding areas.
• Keeps beaches in clean and safe condition.
• Gives suitable assignments and instructions to assigned employees.
• Reviews completed assignments for conformance with efficient and economical trade practices.
• Has charge of and supervises a variety of maintenance repair tasks such as carpentry, plumbing, mechanical work, etc., to the boardwalk and beach area.
• Recommends improvements, alterations and repairs; prepares detailed plans, drawings and estimates for such work.
• Participates in the preparation of budget estimates and supporting exhibits and materials on maintenance operations.
• Requisitions, receives, accounts for, stores and issues materials and supplies.
• Prepares and checks specifications for bids, supplies and equipment.
• Maintains equipment.
• Supervises the preparation of reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
• Supervises the establishment and maintenance of essential records and files.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording information systems used by the agency, office or related unit.

Experience

Five (5) years of experience in work involving a variety of maintenance and repair tasks, two (2) years of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge of the problems, procedures and methods used in inspecting, analyzing, and determining the repair and maintenance work to be done and the materials needed.
• Knowledge of the problems involved in establishing, maintaining and developing effective work procedures.
• Knowledge of obtaining, storing, safeguarding, distributing, and properly using needed equipment, materials and supplies.
• Knowledge of supervisory methods and techniques.
• Ability to identify and correct maintenance problems.
• Ability to give suitable assignments and instruction to employees.
• Ability to handle complaints tactfully and pleasantly, and take needed remedial action.
• Ability to make periodic inspections to determine the efficiency of subordinates.
• Ability to prepare suitable reports.
• Ability to supervise the establishment and maintenance of essential records and files.
• Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
