Definition

Under direction, provides technical assistance and advise to housing firemen engaged in performing a variety of tasks involved in the operation, repair, and maintenance of boilers and heating plants and units; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

  • Inspects, analyzes, and offers advise to housing firemen on the proper use of heating plants and units, available funds, personnel, equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Estimates amounts of materials and equipment needed for various types of boiler equipment.
  • Analyzes and checks to see that cleaning and repair work to boilers are done according to plans and specifications.
  • Prepares reports.
  • Keeps records.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Five (5) years of experience in firing, operating, and making minor repairs to stationary steam boilers and auxiliary boiler equipment.

License

Applicants must possess a current, valid Black Seal Boiler Operator License of the appropriate type (high or low pressure) issued by the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Ability to analyze stationary steam boiler problems.
  • Ability to give advice and assistance.
  • Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
