Definition
Under the direction of the Medical Director, physicians, Director of Nursing Services, or other supervisory personnel, conducts daily medical call, transports patients, and administers first aid; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Organizes assigned duties and develops effective work methods, procedures, and routines.
- Makes daily rounds to assist physicians and nursing staff in determining priorities and scheduling of those patients who should be transported outside the facility for treatment or further evaluation.
- Responds to all calls for emergency medical assistance, renders immediate first aid, and transports the patient when required.
- Takes and records vital signs, temperature, blood pressure, respiration, and pulse.
- Reports to the physicians or nurses on duty any abnormal vital signs or findings.
- Carries out treatment or non-medical therapy as prescribed by the physician.
- Assists with, or actually performs, the movement and transportation of patients to and from treatment areas whether on or off grounds.
- Assists with the maintenance or cleanliness and sanitation in the assigned work area.
- Maintains a complete inventory of emergency medical equipment and supplies and keeps them in a continued state or readiness.
- When so assigned, participates in the in-service training programs.
- May provide instruction in approved methods, procedures, and routines used by Emergency Medical Technicians.
- Maintains accurate records and files.
- May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Education
Applicants are required to possess a current and valid Emergency Medical Technician Certification issued by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services.
Experience
Two (2) years experience as a certified Emergency Medical Technician.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the problems which are likely to arise in working with the injured or medically ill.
- Knowledge of the dangers inherent in and the precautions to be taken in the various treatment areas such as physical therapy, x-ray, laboratory, surgical room.
- Knowledge of the principles of sanitation.
- Ability to understand the rules, regulations, policies and procedures of the department.
- Ability to take and record vital signs, i.e., temperature, blood pressure, respiration, and pulse.
- Ability to perform prescribed therapy as an Emergency Medical Technician.
- Ability to maintain an inventory of all emergency medical equipment and supplies, and to ensure their good working area.
- Ability to work harmoniously with others.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and to perform informative reports as required.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
