Definition

Under direction, does rough carpentry, masonry, concrete, painting, welding, and structural steel work involved in the construction and repair of bridges; does other related duties.

Examples of work

• Working with a crew, raises, places and unites structural steel members to form framework or base of structure.
• Renews and repairs headers, stringers, girders and caps, floor beams and other bridge timbers.
• May repair bridges, bulkheads and culverts.
• Builds and repairs pier and foundation timber, fenders, plank decks, sidewalks, concrete stairways, and other parts of concrete and steel structures requiring the construction of forms and the mixing and placing of concrete.
• Erects and repairs bridge houses, tool sheds and other structures.
• Renews and repairs steel bridge gates, iron fences and gates and pipe rail fences.
• Constructs asphalt and wood block decks, and granite block approaches, tightens, by bolting or riveting, steel headers, cover plates and expansion point plates.
• Rivets and tightens loose parts in steel trusses, stiffening chords, braces, buckle plates and posts.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Two (2) years of experience in heavy maintenance or construction work which shall have included carpentry, masonry, painting, iron and/or welding work.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in NJ only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge of the methods and procedures used in erecting rigging and scaffolding, in replacing stringers, deck planks, pilings and caps and in doing other types of rough carpentry, masonry, concrete and structural steel work required in bridge construction and repair.
• Ability to use, care for, and maintain the instruments, tools, and equipment used in constructing and repairing bridges.
• Ability to learn from observation, oral and written explanations, and from demonstrations.
• Ability to work with associates and that part of the public using bridges.
• Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
