Definition
Under the general direction and supervision of the Supervising Dental Consultant, Department of Institutions and Agencies, is charged with implementing guidelines and policies of the New Jersey Health Services Program of the local level by providing appropriate dental consulting services for the Division of Medical Assistance and Health Services in an assigned Unit; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Authorizes all dental care within the guidelines and policies of the New Jersey Health Services Program.
- Develops interest in and becomes knowledgeable of the community's dental programs and resources (public, voluntary, and private facilities and services), so as to assure maximum utilization and coordination of dental services.
- Aids in establishing and maintaining an updated Dental Health Resources Roster.
- Engages in activities designed to increase provider participation.
- Participates in Fair Hearings as may be required.
- Refers items requiring prior approval or authorization which cannot be acted upon locally to Central Office for necessary action (i.e., conflict of interest, services requiring special consultation and other situations.
- Recommends and assists in obtaining necessary diagnostic studies, specialist consultations, referral to vocational rehabilitation and other special needs as appropriate.
- Recommends changes in policies and procedures based upon local operational experiences to the Supervising Dental Consultant.
- Performs other duties and functions as required or directed by Supervising Dental Consultant.
- Establishes and maintains liaison between the assigned Local Medical Assistance Unit with the Central Office of the Division and other units regarding relevant matters (cases, providers, recipients and other factors).
- Establishes and maintains liaison and interprets the dental aspects of the Health Services Program to staff members of the Local Medical Assistance Unit and other related groups (i.e., acts as dental advisor to casework staff of the County Welfare Boards and/or the District Offices of the Bureau of Children's Services).
- Confers, as required, with Dentists providing services relative to interpretation of the Program diagnoses, treatment plan request, authorization and other related matters.
- Confers with peers review or other committees of the local Dental Society regarding all aspects of the Health Services Program Dental Plan and participates as required in evaluating questionable or unusual cases and/or practices.
- Examine random sampling of claims submitted for pre and post treatment evaluation.
- Examines individual recipients, when indicated, to determine the amount, type, quality and completeness of treatment for comparison with services authorized.
- Provides any necessary function to assist the Bureau of Medical Care Surveillance.
- Reviews patterns of treatment and services furnished by participating Dentists in order to promote quality care reasonable cost; and to assure that the recipients' dental health needs are met.
- Participates in training programs for staff members of the Division concerning the dental program.
- Participates with Division staff in the further development, analysis and evaluation of policies, procedures and methods of providing dental and health services to recipients.
- Participates in training programs with local and State dental societies and other division and agencies to bring about greater understanding of the objective and the general working of the dental aspects of the health Service Program.
- Prepares reports and maintains records and files.
Education
A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) from a School of Dentistry recognized by the American Dental Association and licensed to practice dentistry in the State of New Jersey.
Experience
Ten (10) years of experience in the practice of dentistry including supervisory and administrative experience.
License
Possession of a valid license to practice dentistry in the State of New Jersey.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
