Definition

Under direction, supervises staff involved in the inspection of buildings and other construction work for conformance with plans, specifications and workmanship standards; does other related work.

Examples of work

• Supervises work operations and/or functional programs, and has responsibility for employee evaluations and for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting, and/or disciplining of employees.
• Supervises the inspections of construction jobs; conducts the more difficult inspections.
• Conducts inspections to determine whether the structures are built according to blueprints and that the workmanship and materials comply with specifications.
• Provides assignments and instructions to assigned personnel.
• Prepares reports.
• Establishes and maintains records and files.
• Confers with personnel and contractors engaged in planning and executing construction projects, interpreting specifications, and coordinating various phases of construction inspections.
• Supervises conformance with work schedules; adjusts schedules as necessary.
• Prepares reports on progress, costs and materials used.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Seven (7) years of experience in the preparation and revision of building construction plans, the inspection or supervision of the construction of buildings and structures or, as a journeyman in the building construction structural trades.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jerey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge of the form content and interpretation of building construction plans specifications, and blueprints.
• Knowledge of the varied types of materials and equipment used for the construction of buildings.
• Knowledge of the techniques used to inspect building construction work to determine compliance with plans, specifications and workmanship standards.
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications and contracts.
• Ability to conduct and supervise the conduct of building inspections.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with coworkers.
• Ability to provide guidance, instruction and supervision to assigned personnel.
• Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

A Bachelor's Degree in Architecture or Engineering or a Professional Engineer's license issued by the New Jersey Board of Professional Engineer's and Land Surveyors or a Professional Architect's license issued by the New Jersey Board of Architects may be substituted for the four (4) years of the required experience.
