Definition

Under direction, supervises and works with a group of workers engaged in conducting field inspections to locate and identify mosquito breeding areas; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

• Coordinates and supervises the day-to-day activities involved in the inspection of mosquitos in their hiding or breeding areas (for example, ditches, private roads, or other similar areas where stagnant water exists) to site evidence of their presence.
• Answers complaints and inquiries from the public by giving out basic information on government extermination efforts, mosquito breeding habits, and other related topics.
• May apply and/or supervise the application of approved chemicals and biological controls using protective clothing such as gloves, face masks, goggles, respirators, and so forth according to specific manufacturer's directions.
• May apply and/or supervise the selection and application of different chemicals in designated areas according to appropriate methods and techniques using manual or power equipment such as pressurized spray pumps.
• May weigh, measure, and mix chemicals and mediums according to specific direction to prepare commonly used insecticides for insects such as mosquitos.
• Determines all inspection routes, reviews all inspection reports, and makes appropriate changes in the routes and extermination activities.
• May perform all mosquito identification and survey activities.
• Based on identification and survey results, decides the equipment and insecticide to be used.
• Supervises the chemical extermination of mosquito larva and adult mosquitos.
• Supervises stream clearance projects and meadowland and river dredging activities.
• Handles first level disciplinary problems.
• Keeps records and files on identification and extermination activities.
• Prepares reports.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Four (4) years of experience in mosquito extermination work, two (2) years of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.

License

Possession of a current, valid certificate as a Commercial Pesticide Applicator or a Commercial Pesticide Operator issued by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection may be required.

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

<b>KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY</b>

Knowledge of methods used in applying insecticides and other materials used in the extermination and control of mosquitos.

Knowledge of surface water and problems of drainage as they relate to mosquito control work.

Knowledge of mosquitos including their basic physical characteristics in various stages of development, habits, living or breeding patterns, and their breeding areas.

Knowledge of characteristics and purposes of commonly used insecticides and to select appropriate ones.

Knowledge of methods and problems involved in coordinating and supervising a mosquito extermination and control program.

Ability to carry out and supervise a mosquito inspection program.

Ability to give assignments, instruction, and training to subordinates and supervise their work.

Ability to weigh, measure, and mix chemicals and mediums according to specific directions.

Ability to cover breeding areas with chemicals while avoiding contamination to food and water sources.

Ability to use manual or power spraying and fumigating equipment.

Ability to carry out inspections to detect areas needing spraying and fumigation.

Ability to take and maintain a firm, correct stand when required.

Ability to work harmoniously with associates and others concerned with mosquito control and extermination.

Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate, and informative reports.

Ability to maintain records and files.

Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
