Definition

Under direction, supervises the work of a group of employees conducting various chemical, bacteriological, serological analyses, and other laboratory examinations; does other related duties.

Examples of work

• Determines the accuracy of laboratory results.
• Supervises the performance of complex chemical, bacteriological, serological and other laboratory examinations.
• Discusses the underlying scientific principles of various tests with attending physicians.
• Keeps current with technological developments in the field; evaluates and determines alternative tests and procedures.
• Supervises the performance of new tests and procedures.
• Conducts periodic checks of standard techniques and equipment.
• Provides recommendations to modify existing procedures or establish new tests and examinations.
• Supervises the evaluation of test results.
• Participates in conferences and meetings.
• Supervises quality control and accuracy of procedures.
• Supervises the calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment.

Education

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology.

Experience

Five (5) years of comprehensive, bio-analytical laboratory experience in a certified private, public health or hospital clinical laboratory which shall have included work in one or more of the following areas: hematology, immunohematology, urinalysis, clinical chemistry, serology, bacteriology and parasitology.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in NJ only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

• Knowledge of the methods used to conduct laboratory tests and read and record test results.
• Knowledge of the methods to operate and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment.
• Knowledge of the standard techniques and procedures used in a medical laboratory.
• Knowledge of the precautions used to handle laboratory specimens.
• Knowledge of the principles of medical technology.
• Knowledge of the techniques used to modify existing laboratory procedures and establish new tests and examinations.
• Ability to supervise the performance of complex chemical, bacteriological, serological and other laboratory examinations.
• Ability to determine the accuracy of test results.
• Ability to keep current with developments in the field of medical technology.
• Ability to provide recommendations to modify existing procedures or establish new tests.
• Ability to supervise the evaluation of test results.

• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

Certification as a Medical Technologist by a certifying agency approved by the National Commission for Health Certifying Agencies, may be substituted for the Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology.

Possession of the qualifications of a Medical Technologist as required under Federal Medicare Regulations Subpart M Part 405:1315, Chapter 3, Title 20 of the Code of Federal Regulations for coverage of services of independent laboratories or under the New Jersey State Administrative Code N.J.A.C. 8:44-1-6 may be substituted for the Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology.

A Master's degree in Medical Technology or a related field from an accredited college or university may be substituted for one (1) year of the experience indicated above.
