Definition

Under direction, is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all apparatus in the Fire Department; when required, performs regular fire fighting functions; does related work as required.

Examples of work

• Supervises the maintenance and repair of all fire department apparatus including engines, instruments, and fuel systems, exhaust systems, cooling systems, electrical systems, suspension systems and steering systems.
• Diagnoses malfunctions of fire fighting apparatus; schedules apparatus repair and maintenance; conducts periodic inspections and tests of all apparatus.
• Expedites the procurement of all automotive and pumper parts for repair or replacement; maintains stockroom and issues parts.
• Supervises work operations and/or functional programs, and has responsibility for employee evaluations and for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting, and/or disciplining of employees.
• Supervises and performs emergency repairs.
• Prepares appropriate reports; maintains essential records and files.
• As required, performs all regular fire fighting functions and duties, drives or accompanies fire apparatus to and from files, connects and handles water hoses, assists in extinguishing fires, operates other fire fighting equipment and apparatus; performs rescue operations.
• Participates in fire drills and other training courses.
• Conducts inspections to determine the condition of fire hydrants, and of fire protection apparatus in public and private buildings.
• Pumps out cellars.
• Receives fire alarms and notifies proper fire company.
• May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Education

Graduation from high school or vocational high school, or possession of an approved High School Equivalent Certificate.

Experience

Five (5) years of varied experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of varied types of diesel engines and hydraulic systems, two (2) years of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.

License

Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey.

MEDICAL EXAMINATION

As a prerequisite for appointment, appointees may be required to pass a thorough medical and psychiatric examination to be administered by the appointing authority. Any psychological, medical or physical condition or defect which would prevent efficient performance of the duties of the position, cause appointees to be a hazard to themselves or others, or become aggravated as a result of performance of those duties, will be cause for rejection.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge of the varied types and operation of motors.
• Knowledge of the safety procedures and precautions exercised in the repair and maintenance of fire fighting apparatus and equipment.
• Knowledge of the type and operation of varied instruments and mechanical and electrical systems contained within fire fighting apparatus.
• Knowledge of the tools and equipment utilized to disassemble, install, prepare, reassemble and test motors, brakes, lights and other vehicle parts and equipment.
• Knowledge of the methods utilized to conduct inspections and tests of fire protection and fire fighting apparatus.
• Knowledge of the methods utilized to procure, store, safeguard and issue supplies and equipment.
• Ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical problems and to supervise the maintenance and repair of fire fighting apparatus and equipment.
• Ability to perform scheduled and emergency mechanical repairs.
• Ability to conduct inspections and tests of fire protection and fire fighting apparatus.
• Ability to procure, store, safeguard and issue supplies and equipment.
• Ability to exercise appropriate safety precautions and procedures in the repair and maintenance of fire fighting apparatus and equipment.
• Ability to perform fire fighting duties as required, including strenuous physical activities such as lifting heavy fire fighting equipment, climbing standard and aerial ladders and lifting and carrying people and equipment for rescue and salvage.
• Ability to prepare and maintain essential records and files.
• Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

Positions in this class may be filled through promotional examination procedures only. Candidates must meet those requirements and qualifications for promotion specified in Department of Personnel law, rules, and regulations.

Possession of a certificate showing successful completion of a vocational-educational training program in automotive mechanics approved by the New Jersey Department of Education may be substituted for one (1) year of the non-supervisory work experience indicated above.

OR

Possession of a certificate as an automotive mechanic issued by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence may be substituted for one (1) year of the non-supervisory work experience indicated above.
