Definition

Under direction, has charge of the operation and maintenance of power and heating plants and auxiliary equipment that may include air conditioning and refrigeration equipment; does other related duties.

Examples of work

• Plans work programs and provides assignments and instructions to employees engaged in work relating to operation and maintenance of boilers, engines, motors, and auxiliary equipment in power and heating plants.
• Develops plans for the use of personnel, equipment, materials, and supplies.
• Supervises the operation, maintenance, repair and adjustment to varied types of generators, motors, compressors, feed and vacuum pumps, feed conveyors, blowers, water conditioners, and automatic stokers.
• Supervises the periodic tests and readings of fuel consumption, pressure, draft conditions, temperature, steam flow, and other recordings.
• Inspects and checks safety units.
• May supervise work involved in operation, maintenance, and repair of refrigerating, ventilating, pumping, sewage, water, plumbing, and other auxiliary equipment.
• Analyzes and determines the nature and extent of repairs.
• Obtains, stores, safeguards, distributes, and supervises use of equipment, materials, and supplies.
• Establishes and maintains records and logs.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Five (5) years of experience involving the operation, maintenance, and repair of power and heating plants and auxiliary equipment, one (1) of which should be supervisory.

License

Applicants are required to possess an Operating Engineer's license of the appropriate grade and type, issued by the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge of the methods used in the operation and maintenance of power and heating plants and auxiliary equipment.
• Knowledge of the methods used to operate, maintain repairs and adjustments to varied types of feed and vacuum pumps, generators, and motors, feed conveyors, blowers, and automatic stokers.
• Knowledge of the methods used to conduct periodic readings and tests of fuel consumption, pressure, draft conditions, temperature, steam flow, and other recordings.
• Knowledge of the methods used to inspect power and heating plants and auxiliary equipment.
• Knowledge of methods used to note hazards and analyze and determine needed repairs.
• Knowledge of methods used to lubricate and clean machinery and equipment.
• Ability to develop operating procedures and work methods.
• Ability to effectively utilize personnel and equipment, materials, and supplies.
• Ability to provide assignments and instructions to staff and supervise their performance.
• Ability to supervise and take the lead in work involved in operation and maintenance of various types of boilers, engines, motors, and auxiliary equipment in power and heating plants.
• Ability to supervise the work involved in the operation, maintenance, repair and adjustment to various types of feed and vacuum pumps, generators and motors, feed conveyors, blowers, and automatic stokers.
• Ability to supervise periodic readings and tests of fuel consumption, pressure, draft conditions, temperature, steam flow, and other recordings.
• Ability to inspect varied types of equipment used in power and heating plants, to note hazards and other significant conditions and to determine needed repairs.
• Ability to supervise the cleaning and lubrication of machinery and equipment.
• Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, distribute, and supervise use of equipment, materials, and supplies.
• Ability to establish and maintain records and files.
• Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
