Definition
Under direction of the Director of Welfare, assists and advises in getting aging clients involved in existing community health, educational and leisure time services; participates in community plans to develop additional services and projects for aging; does related work as required.
Examples of work
Works with Welfare Board staff and staffs of other governmental agencies to promote greater participation of the aging in community programs. Advises and consults with individual, councils and community groups to coordinate available resources for the aging. Assists and advises to establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with individuals and services involved in programs on aging. Stays current with literature, current trends and new developments on gerontology. Participates in educational activities. Discusses and explains programs to individuals and concerned groups. Maintains records and files. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in NJ only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of programs and problems pertaining to older people. Knowledge of the methods and theories of gerontology and their application to specific situations. Knowledge of community agencies and resources available to older persons and the method of applying for or utilizing community resources for older persons. Ability to work with public and private agencies and involve them in community program development for the aging. Ability to work with aging individuals to apprise them of current programs Ability to prepare reports. Ability to coordinate the efforts of various individuals and groups. Ability to maintain records and files. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office and related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered acceptable forms of communication. Persons with mental or physical disabilities are eligible as long as they can perform the essential functions on the job after reasonable accommodation is made to their known limitations. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience. Seven (7) years of professional experience in programs relating to elderly people in the fields of social work, public health, nursing, teaching, recreation, gerontology, psychology or vocational counseling. OR Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and three (3) years of the above-mentioned professional experience. OR Possession of a master's degree and two (2) years of the above-mentioned professional experience. "Professional experience" refers to work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the authority to act according to one's own judgment and make accurate and informed decisions.
