Definition

Under general supervision of the Apiarist, Division of Plant Industry, Department of Agriculture, performs and supervises the conduct of bee colony inspections to assure the control of bee diseases; does related work as required.

Examples of work

  • Inspects and supervises the inspection of apiaries to detect the presence of transmissible diseases including, but not limited to, American Foulbrood and European Foulbrood.
  • Advises beekeepers of the proper control measures to be taken when bee diseases occur and supervises the application of the measures.
  • Inspects and supervises the inspection of bee colonies and bee equipment destined for shipment to determine freedom from diseases and issues an official certificate for interstate movement.
  • Interprets and inspects bee import shipments to verify proper certification and freedom from disease.
  • Locates unlisted bee colonies in assigned area and registers for periodic inspections.
  • Arranges for the proper fumigation of bee equipment.
  • Assists in the development and presentation of educational and promotional exhibits.
  • Makes daily and monthly written reports of inspections.
  • Provides on-the-job training to temporary and trainee inspection personnel.
  • Prepares special reports concerning inspection findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Two (2) years of experience in work involving the raising and management of bees.

License

Appointees will be required to qualify for a certificate as a Commercial Pesticide Applicator issued by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of the symptoms of bacterial, viral, and fungal, adult bee diseases and parasites which attack bees.
  • Knowledge of fumigation techniques applicable for the prevention, control, and eradication of diseased bee equipment.
  • Knowledge of the application of the laws of the New Jersey and the United States Department of Agriculture, and the rules and regulations of the New Jersey Department of Agriculture relating to the control of bee diseases; the interstate movement of bees, colonies, and equipment, and the interstate and intrastate movement of queen bees.
  • Knowledge of bee pollination requirements for agricultural crops.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local bee programs in respect to pesticide applications, disease control regulations, certification procedures, and honey production.
  • Ability to train others in the laws, regulation, and control of bee diseases.
  • Ability to provide written or oral technical advice and assistance to apiarists on the problems of bee culture and bee disease control.
  • Ability to perform field inspections of bee colonies and bee equipment.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with associates, apiarists, farmers, and other persons in or concerned with bee culture.
  • Ability to supervise and instruct field personnel.
  • Ability to prepare reports of inspections containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
