Definition

Under direction of a Golf Course Manager, Assistant Golf Course Manager, or other supervisory official in the State Park Service, Division of Parks and Forestry, Department of Environmental Protection, supervises a group of employees and, as required, performs work involved in carrying out specialized maintenance work required for proper care and upkeep of a regulation golf course and its underground irrigation system; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

• Supervises work operations and/or functional programs and has responsibility for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting, and/or disciplining of employees.
• Acts within general instructions, standard procedures, and established policies.
• Ensures efficient, economical accomplishment of work assignments by staff within general work schedules.
• Plans weekly or monthly work schedules and sequence of operations for the crew.
• Establishes deadlines and priorities on the basis of general work schedules, methods, and policies established by higher levels of supervision.
• Determines how many assignments can be done and the number and types of employees needed, considering skills and personnel available to do the work and the availability of materials and equipment required.
• Selects individual workers and assigns the particular work or tasks to be performed.
• Explains work requirements, methods, and procedures as needed.
• Defines the standards of quality and quantity to be met.
• Instructs staff on difficult work operations, reviews work while in progress or on completion, and changes work plans, assignments, and methods as necessary to reduce or control costs and to accomplish work of the unit as effectively as possible.
• Determines equipment, material, and maintenance required, and ensures that material is ordered and delivered to work sites so as not to delay work.
• Coordinates the work of the unit supervised with other units that may be involved.
• Gives assignments to employees engaged in the specialized maintenance of a golf course.
• Instructs new personnel in the operation of all specialized equipment for the golf course, and may operate all equipment used for golf course maintenance.
• Supervises and participates in work concerned with the sowing of seeds, replacing of sod, weeding, cutting grass, irrigation, the application of lime, fertilizers, insecticides and fungicides, and the maintenance of traps, tees, fairways, and greens.
• Requisitions equipment and materials.
• Maintains and/or supervises the maintenance of records and files.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Three (3) years of experience involving the care and maintenance of a regulation golf course including the operation of a underground irrigation system. Experience must be in the care and maintenance of golf course grounds. (Note: General maintenance and care of grounds and gardens is not acceptable).

License

Appointees will be required to obtain a NJ Certified Pesticide Applicator's Permit in the required categories.

Appointees must possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey. Appointees may also be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge of specialized equipment and methods used in caring for a regulation golf course.
• Knowledge of methods used in preparing soil for planting.
• Knowledge of proper care of turf surfaces.
• Knowledge of measures required to maintain equipment and an underground irrigation system.
• Knowledge of proper use of fertilizers, insecticides, and fungicides.
• Knowledge of standards established for the playing surface by the regulations of the game.
• Ability to supervise work of subordinates and to check their work to see that proper care and procedures are followed, that desired objectives are achieved, and that work schedules are effectively administered during the peak season of the sport.
• Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, and use equipment and supplies.
• Ability to maintain records.
• Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
