Definition
Under direction of a Clinical Director or other supervisory official in a state institution or center organizes and supervises a program of physical education and recreation for residents; does other related duties.
Examples of work
Plans and implements a coordinated indoor and outdoor program of recreation and leisure time activities suitable for atypical individuals who are socially or emotionally maladjusted, developmentally disabled, or physically handicapped. Assigns and instructs Therapy Program Assists (Recreation), Senior Therapy Program Assistants (Recreation), Therapy Aides, and other employees involved in recreation and leisure time activities and supervises the performance of their work. Consults with Clinical Directors, Directors of Education, and other department heads to determine the types of physical exercises and recreation activities suitable for individuals having various types and degrees of handicaps, illness, or confinement. Supervises the work operations and/or functional programs and has responsibility for employee evaluations and for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting and/or disciplining of employees. Plans and schedules recreational activities; coordinates these activities with those of other institutional departments. Plans and conducts special therapeutic activities under the guidance of medical and psychology staff. Prepares reports of the recreation program. Education
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree with a major concentration consisting of twenty-four (24) semester hour credits in one of the following areas: recreation, creative arts therapy, therapeutic recreation, art, art education, psychology, sociology or occupational therapy.
Experience
One (1) year of experience in an institutional, public school, or community recreation program.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of the theories, programs, and techniques of physical education and recreation from the therapeutic point of view. Knowledge of the problems encountered in planning and conducting courses in physical education and appropriate recreation activities in order to supplement the activities of the medical, educational, and psychiatric staffs. Knowledge of the problems encountered in organizing and carrying out programs of suitable recreation, including motion pictures, plays, pageants, and field days in order that participating and nonparticipating residents may benefit. Ability to read and understand the policies, standards, procedures, and practices of the operating unit. Ability to understand and utilize theories and practices in psychology, and its application in dealing wit the problems of residents. Ability to analyze and comprehend the theories of physical education and recreation from the therapeutic point of view and apply them in planning and carrying out of a program for residents confined in an institution or center. Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply the standards, policies, and procedures of a department and the institution or center to broad programs or recreation. Ability to organize assigned supervisory and technical recreation work and develop effective work methods. Ability to assign and instruct technical and other employees engaged in the recreation program and supervise the performance of their work. Ability to comprehend the social, personal, psychological, and other problems of residents of varied ages who are confined in institutions or centers. Ability to utilize the concepts of psychology in programs of recreation and physical education. Ability to plan, organize, and carry out courses of physical education and recreation for all types of residents, including entertainment for special holidays and picnics, parties, dances, games, sports, pageants, field days, and suitable motion pictures. Ability to coordinate the recreational therapy works with that of other units and with the medical, educational, and psychiatric staffs. Ability to plan, organize, and carry out plans and programs of recreation for institutional employees. Ability to prepare reports. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience. SPECIAL NOTE: The following requirements apply to positions in environments other than long- term care facilities. Six (6) years of professional experience in an institutional, public school, or community recreation program, one (1) year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity. OR Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and two (2) years of the above-mentioned professional experience, one (1) year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity. OR Possession of a Master's degree in Recreation, Physical Education, or a related field from an accredited college or university; and one (1) year of the above-mentioned professional experience which shall have been in a supervisory capacity. SPECIAL NOTE: In accordance with N.J.A.C. 8:39- 7.1(b), applicants for long-term care facilities under the jurisdiction of the Department of Health and Senior Services must meet the following requirements. Applicants who do not meet the education requirement may substitute education and additional experience and certifications in the following manner: A high school diploma and three (3) years of additional experience in resident activities in a health care facility and satisfactory completion of an activities education program approved by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services for the above educational requirement. A current certification from the National Certification Council for Activity Professionals or the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification may be substituted for the education requirement under N.J.A.C. 8:39- 7.1(b)4. "Professional experience" refers to work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the authority to act according to one's own judgement and make accurate and informed decisions.
