Definition
Under direction in a state institution or agency, designs, implements and supervises a program of music therapy; supervises staff and work activities; prepares and signs official performance evaluations for subordinate staff; does related work as required.

- Determines long and short term music therapy goals in relation to the individual initial and comprehensive treatment plan for the client.
- Supervises clients in the music therapy program and maintains a record of progress and behavior by writing progress notes on the individual's chart.
- Provides both written and oral feedback for review with the treatment team.
- Assigns work and supervises the work of the Music Therapists and other staff engaged in the music therapy program.
- Provides tasks, instruction and guidance to volunteers.
- Selects appropriate music and uses various instruments in the patient units and cottages.
- Plans and supervises programs of music activity, including group singing, rhythm training by means of musical instruments, guided physical activities such as dancing, marching and orchestral work, and programs of music suited to patients' individual and group needs.
- Plans and supervises chorus work, and a variety of programs for the institution and other groups.
- Trains and rehearses patients, participates in entertainment programs of the institution, and acts as master of ceremonies.
- Plans, participates in, and supervises a program of individual instruction in piano, guitar, organ, violin, and other instruments and in voice to patients interested in musical training.
- Plans and supervises the musical activities for special occasions and holidays.
- Develops and provides in service training for staff and volunteers assigned to the music therapy program.
- Supervises the work operations and/or functional programs and has responsibility for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting and/or disciplining of employees.
- Plans programs of recorded music for patients' listening experience based on patients' needs.
- Prepares work schedules for the employees assigned to the music therapy program.
- Prepares evaluations of the varied activities of the music therapy program.
- Establishes and maintains library of sheet music, recordings, and prepared program materials and prepares recommendations for needed materials.
- Prepares correspondence in connection with the music therapy program.
- Establishes and supervises the maintenance of the music library and of the other records and files of the unit.
- Supervises the requisition and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
- Prepares factual reports containing findings, conclusions and recommendations.
- Supervises the establishment and maintenance of the essential records and files.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
Education
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree with a major course of study in music, music therapy or music education.
Experience
Two (2) years of professional experience in a Music Therapy Program.
License
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the goals and objectives of music therapy.
- Knowledge of the principles and methods of providing therapy through the music medium.
- Ability to supervise assigned staff and plan, organize, implement, and review the music therapy program.
- Ability to read and play music on the piano and other instruments.
- Ability to use established vocal techniques to sing and instruct others in singing.
- Ability to understand the emotional and other problems of patients who are confined to an institution.
- Ability to plan and schedule suitable programs of entertainment for individuals confined to an institution and to encourage participation t therein.
- Ability to plan programs of recorded music tailored to the specific needs of each patient unit and cottage.
- Ability to conduct training in the fundamentals of applied music therapy to staff and volunteer workers.
- Ability to establish and maintain a library of sheet music, recordings, and prepared program materials and prepare recommendations for needed materials.
- Ability to establish and maintain sound working relationships with other professional and non-professional employees in a hospital or institutional setting.
- Ability to establish and supervise the maintenance of essential records and files.
- Ability to express oneself concisely and clearly in both the written and verbal medium.
- Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate and informative reports containing findings, conclusions and recommendations.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
