Definition
Under direction of a Director of Nursing Services or other supervisory official in the Department of Education, has charge of the general nursing care of patients in an assigned building; does related work as required. NOTE: The examples of work for this title are for illustrative purposes only. A particular position using this title may not perform all duties listed in this job specification. Examples of work
Organizes assigned supervisory nursing work and develops effective work methods. Assigns and instructs professional nursing and other employees assigned to the unit and supervises the performance of their work. Accompanies physicians on their rounds, assists them with examinations of patients, and takes the measures needed to see that their orders are carried out by the nursing and attending staff. Sees that the patients of the building or other areas are properly bathed and fed and that individual treatments are carried out as ordered by the physicians. Instructs student nurses and members of the attending staff in the approved hospital routines, methods, procedures, and precautions, including the setting up of trays, the serving of meals, the feeding of patients, the bathing and dressing of patients, the changing of bed linens, the sterilization of equipment of varied types, the taking and recording of temperatures, and the giving and recording of medication and treatment. Plans, organizes, and assigns the work of the organizational unit and evaluates employee performance and conduct, enabling the effective recommendation of the hiring, firing, promoting, and disciplining of subordinates. Admits and discharges patients into and from the building or area and supervises and personally keeps the required records. Assumes the responsibility for the care, physical and mental well being, safety, and in some instances, the custody of patients and/or inmates. Assists the Instructor of Nurses in planning and carrying out student work assignments. Supervises the cleanliness, sanitation, order, safety, and discipline within the building. Prepares reports. Maintains and supervises the maintenance of records, reports, and files. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Education
Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.
Experience
Two (2) years of experience as a professional nurse in a hospital, clinic, school system, or other institution. (Private duty experience is not acceptable experience).
License
Registration as a professional nurse in the State of New Jersey. Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position. Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of modern nursing techniques, routines, and methods used in hospitals and other institutions. Knowledge of the standards, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of the department and of the particular institution after a period of training. Ability to organize assigned supervisory nursing work and develop effective work methods. Ability to assign and instruct individuals and groups of professional nurses and attending employees and to supervise the performance of their work. Ability to supervise the proper care and custody of patients and inmates and to see that the orders of the medical staff are carried out. Ability to instruct and supervise the training of student nurses, Psychiatric Technician Trainees, and therapists of several types in approved routines, procedures, and precautions. Ability to encourage the development of a proper professional attitude among the members of the nursing staff. Ability to prepare and supervise the preparation of accurate and detailed clinical, medical, and other records and reports. Ability to maintain essential records and files. Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. Ability to communicate in sign language and AMSLAN.
