Definition
Under direction of the Director of Residential Services, Marie H. Katzenbach School for the Deaf, Department of Education, is responsible for the residential programs and activities of a residence, dormitory, or group of cottages; does related work as required.
Examples of work
Supervises employees including organizing work from approved schedules. Instructs employees in procedures and techniques, and develops effective work methods. Ensures that the students are suitably, safely, and comfortably housed according to established rules, regulations, standards, and policies. Participates as part of a team in hiring, training, and promoting of employees. Participates with academic-vocational, child study, athletic, foods, infirmary, and transportation departments of the school, coordinating all phases of the school program. Participates in staff and other conferences on admission programs and student progress. Coordinates the scheduling of activities and meetings in the residences, dormitories, or cottages. In conjunction with the Director of Residential Living and the school principal, assists in the assignment of students to appropriate living quarters. Determines student room assignments based on personality, educational level, and emotional development as ascertained from student records. Interprets school residential policy to parents or guardians as needed. Makes periodic inspections of assigned area. Coordinates, develops, and carries out a program of social and recreational activities. Maintains discipline within the residences, dormitories, and cottages. Counsels students and/or parents on matters relating to personal and social development of the students. Plans, organizes, and assigns the work of the organizational unit and evaluates employee performance and conduct, enabling the effective recommendation of the hiring, firing, promoting, and disciplining of subordinates. Maintains essential records and files. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information system used by the agency, office, or related units.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of the practical problems involved in supervising the basic safety and cleanliness of residences, dormitories, and cottages in which children with impaired hearing are housed. Ability to communicate effectively with the hearing impaired. Ability to supervise employees and to organize and assign work including developing effective work methods, hiring, training, promoting and terminating. Ability to interpret rules, regulations, standards, and policies of the school and the New Jersey Department of Education. Ability to coordinate the residential program with the academic and other nonacademic programs of the school. Ability to coordinate the scheduling of activities and meetings in the residences, dormitories, or cottages. Ability to supervise the social training and development of students. Ability to maintain a prescribed level of discipline and order in the residences. Ability to interpret specific personal data to ensure the proper placement of students in residences. Ability to involve students in various social and recreational activities. Ability to counsel students and/or parents on matters relating to the students personal and social development. Ability to prepare factual reports. Ability to maintain essential records and files. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience. Six (6) years of professional experience in direct care training and supervision of the hearing impaired in a residential setting, one (1) year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity. OR Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and two (2) years of the above-mentioned professional experience, one (1) year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity. "Professional experience" refers to work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the authority to act according to one's own judgment and make accurate and informed decisions. A medical examination by a physician will be required before appointment.
