• Has charge of and supervises employees performing mechanical maintenance and repair work on motorcycles, trucks, automobiles, tractors, dredging equipment, power lawnmowers, compressors, portable and pressure pumps, mowing machines, snow plows, graders, rollers, vibrators, mud jacks, jack hammers, rock drills, concrete mixers, cranes, mechanical shovels and other equipment and machinery.
• Organizes and assigns supervisory work to garage superintendents, mechanical repairers, foreman, etc., and develops efficient working methods.
• Supervises clerical and administrative employees.
• Sees that contractual work is carried out.
• Maintains vehicle records of mileage, costs of operation and maintenance and replacement schedules; determines and apportions cost of vehicle maintenance to appropriate department in accordance with established rules and regulations.
• Prepares budget estimates and administers approved budget.
• Prepares detailed specifications for new equipment which includes general dimensions, engine types, transmissions and body type.
• Submits proposals for modifications to vendor or manufacturer.
• Maintains liaison with equipment manufacturers and suppliers.
• Visits other jurisdictions to advise about equipment specifications and operations.
• Responsible for storing, recording, safeguarding and proper use of equipment, materials and supplies.
• Prepares suitable reports.
• Supervises the establishment and maintenance of records and files.

Requirements

1. Five years of supervisory experience in the installation, maintenance, repair, design and modification of varied types of motorized equipment and vehicles.

2. Thorough knowledge of the problems involved in giving suitable assignments and instructions to groups and individuals and in supervising their work; of the making and executing of plans for the effective utilization of available funds, personnel, equipment, materials and supplies, of the operation, maintenance, repair, design and modification of motorized equipment.

3. Ability to read, write, speak and understand English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position; ability to analyze equipment operation and maintenance problems; organize assigned work and develop effective work methods; modify new or existing equipment, design equipment specifications; give suitable assignments and instructions to groups and individuals; to make and execute plans for the effective utilization of available funds and personnel; to supervise the obtaining, storing, safeguarding, distribution and proper use of needed equipment, materials and supplies and to keep necessary records.

4. Good health and freedom from disabling physical and mental defects which would impair the proper performance of the required duties or which might endanger the health and safety of oneself or others.
