Where this title is used

Laboratory Aide is a common title, so it is used in both State and local service. The local side is filled by the counties, municipalities, authorities and other employers that have adopted civil service under Title 11A, which set their own pay by ordinance or contract rather than from a State salary schedule.

Definition

Under direction, performs nontechnical work involved in cleaning, preparing for sterilization, sterilizing, and assembling laboratory glassware, instruments, and related items; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

  • Hand washes items using a series of consecutive cleaning steps or operates washing machines by inserting baskets, adding specified amount of detergent and other cleaning solutions, and setting timers to start the wash cycle.
  • Visually checks washed items for chips, waste residues, stains, detergent film, and other imperfections resulting from the cleaning process.
  • Counts, dates, and labels items to be sterilized or placed in storage.
  • Sterilizes glassware and instruments using an autoclave.
  • May pour, measure, and mix liquid, powder, and crystalline chemicals to prepare simple stains, solutions, and culture media, following established formulas and using uninvolved chemical and bacteriological procedures.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies.
  • Scrubs walls, shelves, tables, and sinks using cleaning solutions and brush.
  • May maintain charts and other laboratory records by alphabetizing them.
  • May distribute supplies and laboratory specimens to designated areas.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Ability to read, understand, remember, and carry out oral and written instructions and to learn from demonstrations and from oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to do repetitive tasks that have a sequence of work steps and to perform these tasks the same way each time.
  • Ability to observe common safety precautions when working around biologically contaminated items.
  • Ability to be consistently careful when handling glassware, instruments, and equipment to avoid breakage and injury to oneself and others.
  • Ability to place and arrange articles in sterilizer, cabinets, and on shelves.
  • Ability to operate equipment such as washing machines and autoclaves.
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
