ATTORNEY/DIRECTOR DEPARTMENT OF LAW

A municipality large enough to keep a standing law department puts one lawyer at the head of it, and this title carries both halves of that job at once: the department head who sits with the other directors, and the attorney of record when the city is sued. Under the Faulkner Act forms the mayor appoints department heads, generally with the consent of council.

Admission to the New Jersey bar and the appointment are the qualification, so no eligible list exists. What the office covers swings widely — some departments litigate tax appeals and employment cases in-house, others exist to manage the outside firms that do.
