Definition
Under the direction of the Medical Director, Assistant Medical Director or other supervisory officer in a State hospital, institution or agency is responsible for the physical and mental health of those patients assigned to his/her care; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Diagnoses and heals disorders of the human body.
- Examines patients utilizing all types of medical equipment, instruments, and tests following standard medical procedures.
- Admits and transfers patients to the institution or unit.
- Recommends treatment and studies.
- Makes required ward rounds and inspections.
- Writes up case histories and presents cases at staff for diagnoses treatment and disposition.
- Renders required periodic, incidental, and follow-up reports on progress of patients.
- Consults with other physicians on the proper care and treatment of patients.
- Instructs medical and para-medical personnel in methods and procedures to preserve health and prevent disease.
- Develops and tests new surgical, diagnostic, and treatment techniques, and investigates new drugs and medication.
- Orders and executes various tests and analysis reports and findings of tests and examination and diagnosis conditions.
- Inoculates and vaccinates patients to immunize them from communicable disease.
- Promotes good health by advising patients concerning diet, hygiene, and methods for prevention of disease.
Experience
Completion of medical internship or equivalent; licensure to practice medicine and surgery in the State of New Jersey; demonstrated competence in hospital practice; and Credentials committee or equivalent recommendation.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
