Definition
Under the general supervision of a Principal Engineer, Structural Bridge Design, does the tasks, independently, as one of a group or as a lead worker, involved in working out detailed designs and estimates of the costs of highway bridges and other structures; does other related work.
Examples of work
Prepares information necessary for the development of contract drawings of bridges and other structures, including the layout and complete details. Surveys all aspects of a project, including site conditions, to assemble necessary information to prepare design requirements and details for new structures, widenings, and existing structure rehabilitation. Makes the required vertical and horizontal geometrical calculations for detail layouts. Makes structural design calculations for bridges and related structures. Provides check of final structural design requirements, including difficult analysis of planning and of specific members and details. Computes quantities of contract items needed for bridges and other structural work. Checks contract drawings for conformance with design requirements, structural details and notes. Checks drawings and contractors' working drawings and related computations and recommends appropriate action within the necessary time frame. Prepares alternate structural designs, including cost estimates, to facilitate economic design determinations. May be required to attend pre-construction and other technical meetings to allow construction of project to proceed on schedule. Investigates problems encountered during project construction and reviews or develops resolutions. Reviews analyses and may develop structural items from departmental unit and other agency requests. Prepares engineering reports of a technical nature that may include recommendations for various actions. Develops and assists in the development of in-house engineering oriented programming. Prepares and interprets computer data related to individual engineering projects. Utilizes computer applications in engineering problem solving. Maintains records and files. May be required to learn various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
Education
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
Experience
Two (2) years of experience in structural design and/or structural engineering work.
License
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle rather than employee mobility is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of the problems involved in preparing complex contract drawings and layouts of bridge and other structures using computations and sketches. Knowledge of the making of pencil and ink tracings and complete contract drawings. Knowledge of the procedures and techniques used in computing the quantities of contract items needed for the construction of bridges and other structures and in checking contract, shop, and contractor's working drawings. Knowledge of the capabilities and applications of computers in engineering situations and projects. Knowledge of problems involved in the preparation of alternate structural designs and their cost estimates. Ability to assign and direct the work of subordinates. Ability to carry out structural design assignments. Ability to survey all aspects of a design project and to assemble necessary information. Ability to prepare and trace complete drawings and to check contract, shop, and contractors working drawings. Ability to compute and make complicated estimates of contract items required for bridge and other structural construction projects. Ability to make the required geometrical calculations. Ability to analyze and develop structural items based on given information. Ability to plan and undertake the collection and analysis of engineering data for computer processing and to read and interpret the results. Ability to provide check of final structural design requirements including the analysis of planning and of specific members and details. Ability to anticipate and review problems encountered during project construction and to develop solutions. Ability to analyze the problems involved in preparing contract drawings of entire bridge and other structures from basic computations and sketches. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with coworkers and others involved in the work of the unit. Ability to prepare engineering reports. Ability to maintain records and files. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
