Definition

Under the supervision of a professional staff member, collects, codes and key enters data; performs and assists in the editing, tabulation, review, and/or dissemination of demographic, economic, and program-related data; assists in the production of data and data analyses for Department programs; does other related duties.

Examples of work

  • Using various records from within and outside the Department, assists in reviewing, reformatting and validating identifiers, such as names, addresses, telephone numbers etc., for sample survey units and other employer, worker, and client data files selected for various demographic, safety and health, and economic surveys and program reports, distribution lists, and/or other records.
  • Extracts information from related sources and prepares draft reports of simple projections and/or estimates; recommends coding systems and revisions; assists in the design of data-capture methodologies; furnishes and solicits information via telephone and other electronic sources.
  • Screens and/or verifies report forms, data records or survey instruments for completeness and reasonableness; identifies and corrects routine omissions, coding discrepancies, and obvious errors; reports findings and more complicated problems to a higher level staff member.
  • Reviews and identifies report forms to determine those that can go directly to data entry; resolves routine problems.
  • Assigns routine industry, occupation, injury and illness events, demographic characteristics, geographic and/or other codes.
  • Reviews and edits data and corrects failed edited data.
  • Reviews aggregated statistical data for reasonableness and consistency prior to review by professional staff.
  • Reviews publications and data tables prior to release for data correctness and accuracy; proofreads publications for spelling, typographical and grammatical errors.
  • Enters data from survey respondents and file corrections into Department or national databases and prints or electronically distributes information and reports.
  • Establishes and maintains files, records or actions taken.
  • Uses basic software applications and forms to input, tabulate, analyze, validate or process data; updates program information in computer databases, systems or other data storage.
  • Composes narratives and arranges data elements for inclusion in routine correspondence and/or reports.
  • Gathers, summarizes and compiles departmental program data.
  • Assists in routine data preparation; works with equations, formulas, worksheets, reporting formats, tables, graphs, etc.; may draft routine periodic reports of program or other activities; may assist higher-level research technicians and labor market analysts in drafting narrative analyses.
  • Assists in the training of less experienced Research Technicians and clerical staff members.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.

Experience

Two (2) years of experience in statistical-clerical work.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of statistical sample.
  • Knowledge of survey and other data collection techniques.
  • Knowledge of geographic, occupational, industry, injury/illness, program or other coding systems.
  • Ability to perform moderately difficult mathematical calculations and/or computer software applications quickly and accurately.
  • Ability to review and analyze data for reasonableness and completeness.
  • Ability to run routine updating functions and similar functions of moderate difficulty on personal computers.
  • Ability to work effectively with other staff.
  • Ability to establish and maintain program files and documentation.
  • Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
