Definition
Performs the more routine tasks associated with gathering and organizing data into useable form; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Gathers data from reports and records according to prescribed procedures.
- Checks reports for duplication, mathematical accuracy, completeness, and compliance with prescribed requirements.
- Checks, edits, classifies, corrects, and tabulates material, and compiles statistical tables from these data.
- Locates and arranges data in response to requests for information.
- Requests data omitted from reports or incorrectly reported.
- Codes information prior to data entry.
- Checks data for errors; collates, and files source documents.
- May perform simple mathematical calculations; prorates missing data using a calculator or data processing software.
- Maintains manual and electronic files of statistical data, work sheets and reports, adds new information as necessary.
- Prepares simple special reports from work sheets or computer spreadsheets.
- When it is required, on a sporadic basis, may perform typing which is uncomplicated, does not require skill or speed, and which is of a nature reasonably to be expected of employees in a business office.
- Utilizes various types of common office equipment and information systems.
- Maintains manual and electronic files of statistical data, work sheets and reports.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
One (1) year of experience in statistical-clerical work.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the methods used to collect, sort, code and prepare basic data.
- Ability to understand and accurately apply oral and written instructions and procedures.
- Ability to inspect, code, sort, and check statistical data and to make mathematics calculations rapidly and accurately.
- Ability to work with others to perform detailed statistical- clerical work.
- Ability to maintain established work schedules.
- Ability to perform clerical work involving close attention to accuracy/detail.
- Ability to enter simple data on a personal or mainframe computer screen.
- Ability to maintain manual and electronic records and files of statistical data, worksheets, and reports.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
