Definition
Under the direction of a supervisory officer in the Department of Transportation, inspects vehicles and road construction equipment in use by the department to ensure that equipment is being properly maintained or operated; performs routine and special investigations and inspections in order to determine the adequacy, safety, and quality of equipment; performs related work as required.
Examples of work
- Performs initial and periodic mechanical and other inspections of equipment in order to determine whether safety standards are met as to design, construction, and physical condition; if the equipment does not meet standards, removes the vehicles from service until the necessary repairs are made.
- Inspects assigned manufacturing and/or assembly plants to ensure that new vehicles and equipment are manufactured and assembled in accordance with approved plans, specifications, and purchasing contract terms.
- Inspects equipment rented by the department, such as large cranes and bulldozers; reports condition; ensures that department operational and safety standards are met; ensures proper maintenance of rented equipment in use; verifies the condition of rented equipment upon return to owner.
- Inspects department cars, trucks, road equipment, and snow plows for faulty engine (and/or motor) systems, steering mechanisms, brakes, drive train components, safety equipment, and auxiliary apparatus for indications of poor maintenance.
- Assists in the inspection and outfitting of new vehicles, equipment, tools, and supplies in the Equipment Processing Shop.
- Reports all safety violations and mechanical functions to supervisor.
- Observes employees to determine if department methods are being followed in the maintenance and operation of equipment.
- Inspects garage facilities and reports poor conditions to supervisor.
- Reviews shop records pertaining to the maintenance of vehicular and construction equipment.
- As required, provides technical assistance in trouble-shooting and repairing complex hydraulic, electrical, mechanical, and other systems.
- Performs snow removal, ice control, and/or is available for other emergency situations, day or night as required.
- Maintains records and files.
- Prepares clear and accurate reports.
- May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
Experience
Three (3) years of experience in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of varied types of vehicular equipment, including associated mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems, or components.
License
Appointee must possess a valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the construction, operation, and maintenance of vehicles and road construction equipment.
- Ability to analyze conditions and facts and draw realistic and sound conclusions.
- Ability to work under varying climatic conditions, including rain, snow, heat, and the exposure to dampness, noise, and fumes.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, as well as officials and employees of manufacturing plants and equipment suppliers.
- Ability to understand and interpret schematics, drawings, manufacturing plans and specifications, and equipment manuals for a wide range of vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to analyze equipment problems, organize assigned inspection and investigation work, and develop effective work methods.
- Ability to interpret and apply the state laws, rules, and regulations relating to mobile and stationary vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to prepare comprehensive, clear, accurate, and informative reports.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
