Definition
Under the supervision of a Principal Environmental Specialist or other supervisory official in the Department of Environmental Protection, performs pesticide control work; conducts inspections of pesticide manufacturing establishments, pesticide dealers and applicator businesses to enforce federal and State pesticide control laws and regulations; performs pesticide certification and registration activities; provides the above services to the general population as well as that portion of the population whose basic language is Spanish; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work

- Plans and participates in the enforcement of federal and state pesticide control laws and regulations.
- Processes pesticide certifications, registrations and permits for applicators, businesses, dealers, and manufacturers.
- Conducts investigations and regulatory inspections of manufacturers, dealers and pesticide applicators for compliance with regulations promulgated under the New Jersey Pesticide Control Act.
- Conducts studies of pest control misuse activities and interviews with farm workers to verify alleged pesticide misuse.
- Plans, participates and takes the lead in inspection and sampling pesticide distributed though sales outlets.
- Investigates complaints or actual incidents of pesticide misuse and takes samples.
- Prepares evidence for administrative actions and hearings for the enforcement of pesticide control regulations and provides testimony under oath. Takes affidavits for administrative actions.
- Participates in meetings and conferences.
- Conducts testing to certify pesticide applicators.
- Compiles and analyzes data.
- Prepares materials for environmental impact statements.
- Prepares correspondence and reports.
- Provides guidance and instruction to entry-level environmental specialists.
- Communicates with those who are not knowledgeable of both English and Spanish.
- Maintains essential records and files.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electrical and/or manual recording and information systems used in the agency, office or related units.
Education
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in one of the physical, chemical, biological or environmental sciences or engineering.
Experience
Two (2) years of experience in chemical or bio-chemical research or, in field investigations involving the application of chemical or bio-chemical principles, or in pesticide control work.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
