Definition

Under direction of a licensed Architect in a state department, institution, or agency, does the required work in preparing preliminary and detailed architectural designs, plans, and drawing in preparing preliminary and details architectural designs; does related work as required.

Examples of work

  • Prepares sketches of institutions and building embodying, as far as is possible, those physical features conducive to efficient and economical institution operations.
  • After the design of a building has been approved, makes plans, specifications, and details.
  • Interprets the drawings, plans, and specifications for the estimators, inspectors, contractors, and the various Agencies when questions arise, and makes enlarged drawings of details not clearly understood.
  • Checks shop drawings submitted by the various contractors to ensure compliance with the design intent of the plans and specifications and the contract.
  • Works with other sections of the agency, including the civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering units, to ensure complete understand and cooperation on the project involve
  • Assists in the review of architectural projects prepared by outside architects commissioned by the agency.
  • Does field work to implement various projects.
  • Prepares reports.
  • Prepares architectural and related reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • Maintains essential records and files.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information system used by the agency, office, or related units.

Education

Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor's degree in Architecture.

Experience

Two (2) year of architectural experience in the preparation of architectural plans, details, and specifications.

License

Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of the theory and principles of architecture.
  • Knowledge of the methods used in collecting the data upon which architectural plans and drawings are based.
  • Knowledge of the problems encountered and the procedures used in preparing architectural plans and specification.
  • Knowledge of the methods used to prepare designs, plan, and specifications for buildings.
  • Knowledge of the factors to be considered in determining the location of heating, lighting, and ventilating devices and other operating equipment.
  • Ability to organize assigned architectural work, analyze architectural and closely related problems, and develop appropriate work methods.
  • Ability to prepare plans of buildings from rough schedules and verbal information.
  • Ability to work effectively with associates, estimators, inspectors, state department officials and contractors.
  • Ability to consider the factors involved in the preparation of plans and specifications for building designs, and methods used to determine the proper location of facilities, equipment, and utilities.
  • Ability to prepare reports.
  • Ability to maintain essential records and files.
  • Ability to prepare clear, technically sound, accurate, and informative architectural and related reports containing findings, conclusions and recommendations.
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

Note

Possession of a valid license or certificate as a Registered Architect issued by the New Jersey State Board of registered Architects may be substituted for the Bachelor's degree in Architecture.
